President John Dramani Mahama officially launched Ghana's electronic visa (e-Visa) system, a pioneering digital platform designed to streamline the visa application process for potential visitors. The launch, which took place in Accra as part of the Africa Day celebrations, was a significant event, drawing together ministers of state, diplomats, traditional leaders, security agency heads, and officials from the aviation and immigration sectors.

A cornerstone of this initiative is the immediate removal of visa fees for all African passport holders traveling to Ghana for business and tourism. President Mahama hailed this move as a crucial step towards fostering African integration and driving continental economic transformation. The e-Visa system itself enables travelers to apply for visas online, eliminating the need for physical visits to Ghanaian embassies or consulates. Applicants can complete forms electronically, upload necessary supporting documents, make secure online payments, and receive visa approvals directly via email or mobile devices, typically within 48 hours.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Mahama underscored that the e-Visa system represents a significant milestone in Ghana's broader ambition to build a modern, efficient, and globally competitive state, propelled by technology, connectivity, and innovation. He emphasized that the platform's introduction was not merely about digitalizing visa services but also about reaffirming Ghana's unwavering commitment to Pan-Africanism, African unity, and continental integration. He clarified that while Ghana welcomes visitors, this openness does not imply a relaxation of its national security obligations. The platform is fully integrated with Ghana's Advanced Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record systems, and is linked to international crime and watch-list databases to ensure thorough background checks before any visa is issued.

The President further explained that the previous visa-on-arrival arrangement, initiated during his earlier administration, has been discontinued and superseded by this new electronic visa regime. However, he clarified that nationals from African countries and other states that already have existing bilateral visa waiver agreements with Ghana will continue to enjoy visa-free entry, ensuring continuity for established diplomatic relations.

Ghana, President Mahama asserted, is taking proactive and practical steps towards implementing the African Union's Free Movement Protocol and Agenda 2063. He stressed that the nation would not passively await continental consensus before taking action, choosing instead to give practical expression to the long-held aspiration that Africans should experience free movement across their continent with dignity, opportunity, and purpose. Looking ahead, the President also announced that the government would begin processes to extend visa-free access to people of African descent globally who wish to reconnect with Ghana, further strengthening its Pan-African ties.

Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, reinforced that the e-Visa initiative is an integral part of the government's comprehensive strategy to position Ghana as an attractive destination for both business and tourism. He acknowledged past complaints from foreign travelers and investors regarding cumbersome visa procedures, long queues, and significant delays under the previous system. The new platform, he assured, would deliver faster processing times, enhanced accessibility, improved security features, and reduced human interaction. Dismissing claims of any breach of existing contractual arrangements, Mr. Ablakwa stated that the system is being implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, ensuring no direct financial burden on the taxpayer. He concluded by describing the launch as a tangible demonstration of Ghana's profound commitment to African unity and the enduring Pan-African ideals championed by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
