XPENG's physical AI unit has successfully secured over $900 million in a funding round, valuing its IRON humanoid robot platform at $6.3 billion. This significant capital raise, announced through a series of share purchase agreements with various investors, represents the largest single-round private capital infusion into China's physical AI industry to date, both in terms of the amount raised and the resulting valuation.

He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of XPENG, emphasized the company's long-standing commitment to full-stack in-house research and development over the past 12 years. This dedication has established a robust technological foundation essential for the physical AI era, encompassing its physical world foundation model, Turing AI chips, and comprehensive AI infrastructure. Such advancements are crucial for pioneering the mass production and commercial deployment of advanced humanoid robots.

Despite the success of its robotics division, XPENG's core vehicle business has faced considerable challenges. At the time of the announcement, XPENG's shares were down 7.22 percent, with a 12-month decline of 51.24 percent. This downturn is attributed to intensifying competition within China from domestic manufacturers and from Tesla in both overseas and domestic markets. This creates a dichotomy where investors are valuing the robotics division highly at $6.3 billion, even as the parent company's shares continue to fall.

The financing round was led by IDG Capital, with participation from Gaorong Ventures. Strategic investors Tencent and Alibaba also joined the round, providing strong backing. XPENG will maintain controlling ownership of its robotics business following the closure of this round, ensuring the unit remains consolidated within the group’s financial statements. The newly acquired capital is designated for long-term investment in full-stack physical AI development. This includes strengthening incentive arrangements for senior executives and staff in the robotics division, funding software and hardware R&D, and supporting the training and iteration of its physical AI models. Furthermore, funds are earmarked for generating high-quality data, establishing end-to-end mass production facilities, and pursuing commercial expansion beyond China.

At the core of XPENG’s physical AI strategy is the IRON humanoid robot platform. Designed with a fully-enclosed flexible lattice structure, IRON aims to achieve a balance between aesthetic appearance and safety. The robot boasts 76 degrees of freedom across its body and an impressive 21 degrees of freedom in each hand, underscoring its high dexterity and mobility. XPENG developed IRON's hardware platform entirely in-house, including the custom chips and controllers that power its core movement systems. Dedicated motion modules and dexterous hand mechanisms are integrated to manage finer manipulation tasks. The company is leveraging its automotive-grade quality standards and production processes, refined through its electric vehicle manufacturing, to scale robot output and delivery volumes.

In terms of computing power, IRON delivers up to 2,250 TOPS of effective computing capabilities, powered by three in-house-designed Turing AI chips. This on-board processing capacity allows XPENG to run its physical AI foundation model directly on the robot, enabling IRON to execute complex tasks with minimal inference latency and local data processing.
