Fury's Shock Move: Joshua Fight Off, Usyk Trilogy On!

Heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury has publicly declared that his highly anticipated blockbuster fight with Anthony Joshua is off. This announcement, made on social media, signals a significant shift as Fury has immediately turned his attention towards a potential trilogy clash with Ukrainian star Oleksandr Usyk. The proposed all-British showdown between Fury and Joshua had been plagued by continued uncertainty surrounding its venue and key financial questions, leading to stalled negotiations despite both fighters being contracted to compete later this year.

The dispute primarily centered on the location of the long-awaited fight. While Joshua and his promoter, Eddie Hearn, insisted on staging the bout in the United Kingdom, the event's promoter and financier, Sela, along with broadcaster Netflix, advocated for the United States. Madison Square Garden in New York was reportedly discussed as a possible venue for November 20, aiming to maximize the American television audience. However, discussions had reportedly resumed for Wembley Stadium after London Mayor Sadiq Khan publicly urged promoters to bring the event to the capital, stating, "We want to host it in London. Talk to us, we’re really keen to have it." Fury, however, laid the blame squarely on Joshua, branding him "weak-minded" and suggesting he lacked the courage to take the fight, asserting his disinterest in further waiting for the negotiations to conclude.

Following the breakdown, Fury issued a direct challenge to Oleksandr Usyk for a third encounter. "This will only lead me to a fight with Oleksandr Usyk," Fury declared. "Good luck to you, let us do it again. Let us run it back in November. The ball is now in your court. Do you want to fight me this year, 2026, or are you calling it quits? Let me know because I am now looking for a new opponent." Usyk previously defeated Fury twice on points in 2024, first becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion in May, then retaining his status in a rematch seven months later in December. Usyk (25-0) has since relinquished his three heavyweight world titles in June 2026 and is reportedly nearing a deal to fight fellow former world champion Deontay Wilder.

Both Fury (36-2-1) and Joshua (30-4) participated in tune-up fights in July 2026, which were widely considered preludes to their intended clash. Joshua notably faced a challenging bout, being knocked down twice by Kristian Prenga, nearly suffering a shock loss. Usyk (25-0) also appeared to be short of his peak form in his stoppage victory over Dutch kickboxer Rico Verhoeven in May 2026. Despite Fury's forceful declaration regarding the Joshua fight's cancellation, no official confirmation has been issued from either camp, leaving a slim possibility that negotiations for the proposed November bout could still resume.
