Fintech Giant Unlimit Secures Third African Payment License, Expanding Across Continent

Unlimit, a global fintech company, has officially announced its strategic entry into the Tanzanian market after successfully obtaining a license from the Bank of Tanzania (BOT). This significant regulatory approval positions Unlimit as an authorized payment service provider, enabling it to introduce a comprehensive suite of offerings within Tanzania, including business payments, merchant services, and outbound payment solutions.
This launch in Tanzania represents a crucial advancement in Unlimit's overarching strategy for expansion across the African continent. It follows similar licensing achievements in Nigeria and Kenya last year, underscoring the company's sustained commitment to enhancing its presence and investment in the region. By expanding the reach of its proprietary payment infrastructure throughout Africa, Unlimit aims to remove existing barriers to regional and global trade for local entrepreneurs and businesses, aligning with its mission to eliminate financial borders globally.
Peter Mlay, Head of Tanzania at Unlimit, expressed gratitude for the regulators' support and highlighted the company's eagerness to onboard international and local merchants, businesses, and entrepreneurs. He emphasized Unlimit's dedication to driving greater value and consumer choice across the Tanzanian market through its unique payment solutions. Trevor Goott, Director for Africa and India at Unlimit, reiterated the tremendous opportunity in Tanzania, emphasizing the goal to consolidate the fragmented African payments landscape and foster broader economic growth by supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs with expertly tailored digital payment solutions, building for the long term.
Founded in 2009, Unlimit has evolved into a global fintech powerhouse, offering a diverse portfolio of financial services. These include advanced payment processing, banking as a service (BaaS), and an on-ramp fiat solution designed for the crypto, DeFi, and GameFi sectors. The company's core mission revolves around delivering solutions that empower businesses to operate seamlessly, both locally and internationally, across key markets such as Europe, the UK, Latin America, APAC, and Africa.
Headquartered in London, Unlimit boasts a robust global footprint with 500 employees spread across 16 offices on five continents, including major hubs in Frankfurt, Singapore, São Paulo, Hong Kong, and Mexico. The company's commitment to continuous innovation is evident in its history; it changed its name from Unlimint in May 2023 to better align its brand with its evolving positioning and mission. Initially focused on payment processing, Unlimit has consistently expanded its capabilities and product offerings over its 14-year existence to meet the dynamic demands of the market.
The growth of cross-border transactions further highlights the relevance of Unlimit's initiatives. According to BCC Research, the market for these transactions is projected to reach $238.8 billion by 2027, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.3 percent. Unlimit aims to empower its clients with the freedom and flexibility to conduct payments from anywhere, at any time, thereby removing any limitations that might hinder business expansion. Kirill Evstratov, CEO at Unlimit, has previously articulated his team's passion for driving financial inclusion globally by making banking services more accessible, convenient, and affordable for individuals traditionally excluded from the mainstream financial system due to factors like location, income, or lack of credit history, underscoring Unlimit's role as a leader in innovative financial solutions.
