Explosive Controversy: Orban Red Card & Racism Claims Rock Hellas Verona, Club Issues Blackout
)
Hellas Verona's Serie A clash against Parma Calcio 1913 was marred by controversy surrounding a suspicious red card issued to former Super Eagles invitee, Gift Orban, just 11 minutes into the match. The incident, and its aftermath, sparked significant debate both on and off the pitch, with the club taking a strong stance against the referee's decision and denying a social media post attributed to the player.
The pivotal moment occurred when Orban, visibly frustrated, protested a challenge from Parma defender Enrico Del Prato in the centre circle. His gesture towards referee Luca Pairetto resulted in a straight red card, leaving Hellas Verona with ten men for the remainder of a crucial game they desperately needed to win to aid their fight against relegation.
Following the match, a post on X (formerly Twitter) attributed to Orban quickly gained traction. The message read: “Sent off for protesting a decision. As a Black player in Italy, I can’t ignore how often we’re treated differently. I love the game, and all I ask for is fairness, respect, and equal treatment on the pitch❤️” This statement ignited further discussion online, questioning both the referee's decision and the broader issues of fairness and equal treatment in Italian football.
However, Hellas Verona was swift to distance their player from the controversial statement. In an official clarification, the club stated: “In relation to a post published today on a social media profile on X attributed to Gift Orban, Hellas Verona clarifies that this profile does not belong to Gift Orban.” This denial aimed to quash speculation regarding the striker's personal views on the incident and potentially shield him from disciplinary action by Serie A authorities.
The club itself also expressed its profound dissatisfaction with the refereeing decision. Verona officials described the red card as harsh and disrespectful, not only to the team but also to their supporters and the city. As a form of protest against the refereeing authorities, Hellas Verona broke tradition by refusing to speak to journalists after the final whistle, indicating their belief that a significant injustice had been done.
The match itself started poorly for Verona, with Parma taking an early lead in the fourth minute through Adrian Bernabé. Despite being a man down after Orban's dismissal, Verona displayed commendable spirit. Midfielder Abdou Harroui calmly converted a penalty just before half-time, leveling the score at 1-1. For much of the second half, Verona defended bravely, seemingly on track to earn a valuable point. However, their resistance was ultimately broken deep into stoppage time when Mateo Pellegrino scored in the 93rd minute, securing a dramatic win for Parma.
The defeat was particularly painful given Orban's strong form since joining Verona from Hoffenheim in the summer. He has been a key attacking player for the team, recording seven goals and two assists in 22 league appearances. Hellas Verona now hopes that this controversy does not undermine their momentum as they continue their challenging battle to avoid relegation from Serie A.
