The Ethereum Foundation's Protocol Cluster has laid out an ambitious new roadmap, targeting a fully quantum-resistant Ethereum layer 1 by December 2029. This comprehensive goal encompasses all three critical components of Ethereum's base layer: execution, consensus, and data. The initiative is driven by a proactive stance against the potential emergence of sufficiently powerful quantum computers, which the Foundation believes could appear as early as 2030, though acknowledges it's more likely to be further in the future.

Ethereum developers are not content to wait until the threat of quantum computing becomes imminent. The Protocol Cluster emphasized this urgency, stating, "Q-day cannot be scheduled, so we have assigned ourselves a self-imposed deadline." This December 2029 target is set to remain effectively non-negotiable until at least January 2027, when the Foundation plans to reassess ongoing developments and progress in the field.

The critical concern stems from the fact that an advanced quantum computer could, in theory, compromise some of the foundational cryptographic schemes that modern blockchains, including Ethereum, currently rely upon. To mitigate this risk, the Foundation is working diligently to replace these vulnerable systems well in advance of any such machines becoming practical. The quantum-resistance roadmap includes the implementation of post-quantum signature schemes and necessitates significant changes across Ethereum’s transaction, consensus, and data-availability systems.

This quantum-resistance roadmap is being developed concurrently with other major Ethereum upgrades. The upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade is currently slated for December 2026. Under one proposed version of the roadmap, full post-quantum readiness would be achieved over the course of five subsequent hard forks. An alternative path suggests a slower, 12-month cadence to reach the minimum viable quantum-resistant milestone. Furthermore, the quantum-resistance efforts are intertwined with the development of Hegotá, the upgrade anticipated to follow Glamsterdam, which the Foundation views as an important prerequisite for achieving full quantum-resistance.
