DC Shakes Up Universe: Iconic New Joker Revealed!
Discover the chilling new interpretation of The Joker in Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2, portraying him as a cold, evil criminal inspired by early comics. Additionally, explore a sci-fi survival quiz that determines which iconic dystopian universe—from The Matrix to Star Wars—you are best equipped to survive based on your instincts and choices.
A radically different and terrifying interpretation of The Joker has been introduced in Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2, voiced by Matthew Needham, known for his role as Larys Strong in House of the Dragon. This new version of the iconic villain deviates from the theatrical personality often associated with modern portrayals, drawing inspiration instead from The Joker’s earliest comic book appearances and German Expressionist cinema. Needham describes his character as "very serious, very cold, not fun, but absolutely evil," reflecting a stoic European criminal who rarely laughs or makes jokes.
Initially teased in the Season 1 finale, The Joker fully emerges in Season 2 as one of Gotham City’s most formidable threats. He is revealed to be the mastermind behind a toxin spreading throughout the city, turning its citizens into uncontrollably laughing victims. His elaborate plan includes infecting prominent figures like Hattie Tetch during a live broadcast and targeting Mayor Jessop. The season culminates in a dramatic rooftop confrontation between Batman and The Joker, where the Clown Prince is impaled by a steel pole and seemingly falls to his death, letting out one of his rare, chilling laughs. Batman: Caped Crusader is an Elseworlds-style series from Warner Bros. Animation, Amazon MGM Studios, and Bad Robot, distributed under the wider DC Studios banner, operating outside of Gunn and Safran’s main DC Universe continuity. Season 2 is currently streaming on Prime Video.
Alongside this DC revelation, a unique interactive quiz titled “Which Sci-Fi World Would You Survive?” has been presented, challenging participants to determine their survival instincts across five iconic universes: The Matrix, Mad Max, Blade Runner, Dune, and Star Wars. This eight-question quiz delves into various aspects of survival, including one’s first instinct when sensing something is wrong, the most fiercely guarded resource in a world of scarcity, the type of threat that causes fear, how one deals with untrusted authority, which environment could be endured long-term, who one would want in their corner during a crisis, where one draws moral lines, and what makes survival truly worth it.
Based on the responses, the quiz calculates a tailored survival profile for each world:
- The Matrix: Survivors are systems thinkers, adept at noticing discrepancies in constructed realities, and inclined to join the Resistance. Their strength lies in accessing information and breaking oppressive systems.
- Mad Max: This wasteland rewards those who are hard to kill and unbreakable. These individuals are unsentimental, prioritizing a vehicle, a clear threat, and fuel to outrun danger, embodying a bare-bones approach to survival.
- Blade Runner: Survival in Los Angeles, 2049, depends on navigating moral grey areas without losing oneself. These individuals read people accurately, keep their circles small, and are not heroes, but are also not lost in the city's complex humanity.
- Dune: The hostile environment of Arrakis favors those with patience, discipline, and political awareness. They understand the long game and can learn the desert's logic, eventually reshaping it.
- Star Wars: In a vast, politically turbulent galaxy, survivors find meaning in being part of something larger, gravitating towards a cause, a crew, or a rebellion against the Empire, driven by a profound unwillingness to stand aside.
The quiz provides a unique way for fans to explore their own temperaments and survival instincts against the backdrop of these iconic sci-fi dystopias.
