According to Jeff Carroll, the interim chief of police of the Metropolitan Police Department, the suspect was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, appearing to be a “lone” gunman. Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed the sole gunman and stated there was no reason to believe anyone else was involved. Allen was taken to a local hospital for evaluation but was not shot himself. Investigators believe he did fire a shot and was potentially a guest at the hotel. A motive for the attack has not yet been publicly disclosed by officials.

During the chaos, a law enforcement official reported that an officer was shot, but a bullet-resistant vest prevented serious injury, and the officer is expected to recover. President Trump later confirmed this detail, praising the quick and effective actions of the Secret Service and law enforcement. Jeanine Pirro, the US attorney for the District of Columbia, announced that the defendant has been charged with two counts of felony firearms and assault charges, with an arraignment scheduled for Monday and expectations of further charges.

Following the disruption, President Trump posted on Truth Social, assuring the public that the First Lady, Vice President, and all Cabinet members were in "perfect condition." He announced the dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days. Notably, the Washington Hilton is the same hotel where President Ronald Reagan was shot and gravely wounded by a would-be assassin in 1981.
