Bulls Front Office Firing Shakes Up Season's End

The Chicago Bulls have announced a significant overhaul of their basketball operations, firing President Arturas Karnisovas and General Manager Marc Eversley, a move that, while surprising in its timing, reflects six years of mounting futility for the franchise.
The duo, who took the helm at the beginning of the 2020-21 season, presided over a period marked by an ever-growing list of roster errors and perplexing transactions that baffled the league and alienated fans.
Under Artūras Karnisovas, the Bulls have struggled, going 224-254 over six seasons.
Their only winning season, 2021-22, ended in a quick first-round playoff loss to the Bucks.
This year, they’re 29-49, 12th in the Eastern Conference.
The team had been thinking about changes for weeks, especially after letting go of Jaden Ivey, which raised questions about their decisions.
Owner Michael Reinsdorf said these mistakes hurt the team’s credibility with fans and around the league.
With only a week left in the season, the team made a surprising shake-up.
Sources said there was a “disconnect” between the front office and the rest of the organization, and many weren’t sure what the team’s plan was.
One source told ESPN they needed a “clean slate” to start fresh.
Years of questionable trades had built up, especially the 2021 deal for Nikola Vucevic, which sent Wendell Carter Jr., Otto Porter Jr., and two first-round picks to Orlando.
Even GM Artūras Karnisovas admitted it was a mistake, saying it should have been the final step toward success, not a move that risked the team’s future.
The Bulls’ rebuild hasn’t gone smoothly.
High draft picks like Patrick Williams didn’t pan out as expected, yet he still got a $90 million contract.
Meanwhile, the team stuck with Nikola Vucevic, DeMar DeRozan, and Zach LaVine for years, even after Lonzo Ball’s long-term injuries, turning what could have been a contender into a play-in team.
Front office moves came too late, and trades for this core brought minimal returns.
Ownership felt stuck between not wanting to tank and trying to compete, leading to a slow dismantling of the old roster.
LaVine, Ball, Vucevic, and Dosunmu have all been moved, mostly for small returns.
As one insider said, “We took too long to pick a lane. The Lonzo thing really messed us up.”
Now, the Bulls are focusing on youth like Josh Giddey, Matas Buzelis, and Noa Essengue.
Billy Donovan remains the coach, respected by players and staff, and management wants him to stay.
With cap space, draft picks, and a clean roster, the Bulls hope a new front office can chart a clear path forward.
