Olatunji Disu Confirmed as Nigeria’s New IGP

The Nigeria Police Council has officially endorsed Acting Inspector-General Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police. The decision, announced on Monday, was made at a Council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.
Disu’s appointment as the 23rd IGP aligns with the Police Act 2020, which empowers the Council to confirm presidential nominations. The Council includes all 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the IGP.
He steps into the role following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who cited family reasons. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed that Senate approval is not required under the Act, with Disu expected to be sworn in by the President.
At 59, Disu brings over three decades of law enforcement experience.
He previously served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Lagos, and held leadership roles as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the FCT.
Disu’s operational career spans the Intelligence Response Team, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), SARS, and anti-kidnapping units across several states. His command experience also includes Divisional Police Officer (DPO) postings in Ogun, Ondo, and Rivers states.
Academically, IGP Disu holds a degree in English Education from Lagos State University and master’s degrees in public administration, criminology and security, and legal psychology.
He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
At his handover ceremony, Disu pledged a reform-focused vision emphasizing professionalism, modern policing, and accountability. Despite being due to retire next month, he is expected to serve a four-year term, signaling a renewed focus on institutional reform and public trust.
The appointment meeting was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and governors including Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos) and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara). Ministers of Police Affairs, Interior, and the FCT also attended.
