Box Office Shocker: 'Five Nights at Freddy’s 2' Hits VOD While Still Dominating Theaters

The highly anticipated film Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has made a surprising and rapid transition to Video On Demand platforms, including Prime Video, Fandango at Home, and Apple TV. This move comes shortly after the horror-thriller completed its third full weekend in theaters, where it has already amassed an impressive global box office total exceeding $200 million, four times its reported $50 million production budget, underscoring its commercial success.
During its third weekend in cinemas, "Five Nights at Freddy’s 2" added $7.6 million to its earnings, despite a 61% drop from the second-weekend performance. Blumhouse, the production company, remains confident in the movie's theatrical achievements and its potential to continue performing robustly in the digital rental and purchase market. While the film will remain in theaters for several more weeks, its VOD availability provides fans immediate access, though those wishing for a big-screen experience are encouraged to act soon.
The film features a notable cast, including Josh Hutcherson, widely known for his role as Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games and his recent appearance alongside Jason Statham in "The Beekeeper." Matthew Lillard, remembered for Stu Macher in "Scream" and Shaggy in the live-action "Scooby-Doo" films, also stars and is slated to appear in the second season of "Daredevil: Born Again" next year. Emma Tammi directed the film, with Scott Cawthon, creator of the game franchise, contributing as a writer and producer alongside Jason Blum, Jennifer Scudder Trent, and Jon Romano.
Regarding the streaming future of the franchise, the first "Five Nights at Freddy’s" movie is not currently available on any subscription service. Like its sequel, it can only be accessed at home through VOD via purchase or rental. However, given Blumhouse's affiliation with Universal Pictures, it is likely discussions are ongoing to secure streaming dates for both films, with Peacock emerging as the probable home for the series. Despite mixed critical reception, both movies have proven to be major box office draws, demonstrating a strong and dedicated audience within the horror genre.
