Automotive Tech Unveiled: 2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback Challenges Nissan Leaf

The 2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback has undergone a preproduction drive, revealing its identity as an effective mechanical twin of the Nissan Leaf. Positioned to be a solid option for consumers seeking a well-equipped electric vehicle (EV) at an affordable price, the Eclipse Sportback is expected to offer several compelling advantages over its Nissan counterpart.

A significant differentiating factor and a primary benefit for the Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback is its notably superior warranty. Mitsubishi provides a robust five-year or 60,000-mile warranty, which substantially exceeds the Nissan Leaf's coverage of three years and 36,000 miles. This extended warranty coverage offers a considerably greater sense of security and value for prospective owners.

Although official pricing details are still pending closer to its rollout, there is strong anticipation that the Eclipse Sportback will be competitively priced. Expectations are that it could launch at or below the approximate $36,000 starting price of the mid-tier Leaf. This optimism stems from Mitsubishi’s previous strategy with the 2026 Outlander plug-in hybrid, which was priced several thousand dollars less than the highest-level 2026 Nissan Rogue PHEV, itself a rebadged Outlander. If this trend continues, savvy buyers could receive enhanced features and warranty for a more accessible price.

Mitsubishi has intentionally styled the Eclipse Sportback to present a sportier exterior aesthetic compared to the Leaf. This design effort includes a new grille, updated bumpers and fascias, distinct lighting elements, smoked taillights, and unique 18-inch wheels. Customers will have a choice of five exterior colors: white, black, gray, red, and blue. The vehicle projects a clean, mildly aggressive appearance, highlighted by the Triple Diamond logo and Mitsubishi lettering prominently displayed across the rear. This SUV/coupelike hatch will be available in a single, comprehensively equipped trim. An optional Tech package can further enhance the vehicle, adding a panoramic roof with on/off shading functionality, a premium Bose audio system with 10 speakers (including some integrated into the headrests), roof rails, and a power liftgate.

The interior of the Eclipse Sportback features an all-black theme, complete with black perforated synthetic leather seats that showcase a diamond stitch pattern accented with white piping. While certain surfaces consist of hard, black plastic, the doors are trimmed with black cloth featuring subtle blue specks. The cabin is equipped with dual 14.3-inch displays, serving as the driver's instrument cluster and the central infotainment touchscreen, both delivering bright and clear visuals. Most controls are managed via touchscreen inputs, though a convenient physical volume knob is retained. The gear shift operates through a series of buttons positioned on the lower part of the dash, alongside the drive mode selector and a dedicated button to activate or deactivate e-Step regenerative braking.

The center console adopts a minimalist yet functional design, incorporating an open bin with a vertical phone slot and two cupholders. The armrest intelligently extends to include a wireless phone charger, and a covered compartment underneath provides a small, deep storage bin suitable for items like a wallet. For second-row passengers, amenities include air vents, USB outlets, and seat warmers. The backs of the front seats are covered in a durable material, which feels like cloth reinforced with plastic. While rear seat headroom is noted as being on the
