Atlas Lions Roar into World Cup Quarters: Morocco's Thrilling Victory Over Canada!

Morocco has made history by becoming the first team to secure a place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a decisive 3-0 victory over co-hosts Canada at the Houston Stadium on Saturday. This significant win also marked the elimination of Canada from the tournament, as they became the first of the co-host nations to be knocked out.

The first half of the match proved to be a challenging period for the Atlas Lions, who were initially outplayed by a determined Canadian side. The Canucks, having entered uncharted territory after winning a World Cup match and then a knockout game for the first time, displayed early confidence. A key moment occurred in the 10th minute when Tanitoluwa Oluwaseyi executed a superb turn in the box and fired a goal-bound shot, which was brilliantly saved by Morocco's Montreal-born goalkeeper, Yassine ‘Bono’ Bounou. Morocco faced a major setback midway through the first half, around the 20-minute mark, when key attacker Ismael Saibari, who had scored three times in the tournament, succumbed to an injury and was replaced by Soufiane Rahimi. As the interval approached, frustrations grew for Morocco, with captain Achraf Hakimi, Azzedine Ounahi, and Bilal El Khannouss all receiving yellow cards in a half that saw six bookings in total, four for Morocco, and was marked more by niggly fouls than clear goal-scoring opportunities. The score remained locked at 0-0 at halftime, with Canada looking the more confident side in front of a crowd of 68,777.

However, Morocco, the 2022 semi-finalists, emerged transformed in the second period, quickly overcoming their first-half struggles. Just five minutes after the restart, in the 50th minute, they claimed the lead through a meticulously executed set piece. From a free-kick wide on the right, Achraf Hakimi delivered a low cut-back to the edge of the box, where Azzedine Ounahi directed a powerful shot through a crowd of players and into the bottom corner of the net for a 1-0 advantage. As the second half progressed, Canada, desperate for an equalizer, began committing more players forward, which Morocco expertly exploited on the counter-attack. In the 82nd minute, Brahim Diaz provided a crucial assist, setting up Ounahi for his second goal, struck from a similar spot as his first but swept into a higher part of the net, extending Morocco's lead to 2-0. The Atlas Lions nearly scored a third shortly thereafter when Ounahi turned provider, crossing from the right to pick out an unmarked Rahimi, whose header rebounded off the underside of the crossbar. Nevertheless, Soufiane Rahimi ultimately found his goal deep in injury time, in the 98th minute, completing a sweeping counter-attack to seal Morocco's dominant 3-0 victory and confirm their progression to the next round in style.

Morocco will now prepare to face either title favorites France or Paraguay in the first quarterfinal match, which is scheduled to take place at the Boston Stadium on Thursday, July 9th.
