Arteta's Anguish: Post-Man United Defeat Sparks Vieira's Fiery Criticism
)
Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes suffered a major setback after a dramatic 3-2 home defeat to Manchester United, their first loss at the Emirates Stadium this season.
It was only the Gunners’ third league defeat overall, but the result has cut their lead at the top of the table to just four points over Manchester City and Aston Villa, intensifying pressure on Mikel Arteta’s side.
Late Cunha Winner Sinks Arsenal in Five-Goal Thriller
The match unfolded in dramatic fashion. Arsenal took the lead in the 29th minute when Lisandro Martínez turned the ball into his own net. However, a costly error from Martín Zubimendi allowed Bryan Mbeumo to equalise eight minutes later.
United then went ahead shortly after the break through a superb volley from Patrick Dorgu in the 50th minute.
Arsenal appeared to have rescued a point when Mikel Merino scored an 84th-minute equaliser, but Matheus Cunha struck just three minutes later with a brilliant winner.
The goal sealed United’s first league victory at Arsenal since 2017 and extended the Gunners’ winless league run to three matches.
Vieira and Keane Question Arsenal’s Mentality
The defeat sparked strong criticism from former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira, who questioned the team’s mentality.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Vieira said, “There are still some questions about the mental strength of the team.” He expressed disappointment not only with the result but with Arsenal’s overall approach, pointing to a lack of creativity from key attackers such as Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard.
Vieira was particularly critical of Arsenal’s risk-averse play, arguing that the team relied too heavily on safe, backward passing.
“The feeling is that there’s no risk, there are too many passes going backwards, not forward. I want Arsenal to be more brave, take a little bit more risk,” he said, adding that the side needs a leader capable of injecting energy and encouraging players to express themselves.
Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane echoed similar concerns, suggesting Arsenal lacked the cutting edge and ruthlessness required of genuine title contenders, especially in decisive moments against top opposition.
