Despite its comparatively smaller size, Opus 5 has demonstrated superior performance over Fable 5 in numerous benchmarks, as highlighted in Anthropic's official announcement. This rapid development comes just two months after the release of Opus 4.8 on May 28th, showcasing Anthropic's accelerated innovation cycle. The launch of Opus 5 follows the June releases of Mythos 5, Fable 5, and Sonnet 5, leaving only the lightweight Haiku model awaiting its upgrade to the '5' series.

A key emphasis in Anthropic's announcement was Opus 5's enhanced capability in self-verification and iterative refinement. The company stated that Opus 5 is "much stronger at verifying its work and iterating carefully until it succeeds." This claim is supported by benchmark testing, including an instance where Opus 5 successfully developed its own computer vision pipeline in response to an incomplete prompt, illustrating its advanced problem-solving abilities.

Crucially, Opus 5 addresses several restrictions that have been associated with Fable since its inception. Notably, Opus 5, like its predecessor, is exempt from the 30-day data retention policy that applies to Fable and Mythos. This exemption is expected to alleviate privacy concerns previously raised by some users regarding data handling practices.

While offering greater freedom, Opus 5 still incorporates meaningful safeguards, particularly concerning sensitive cybersecurity tasks such as exploit generation and penetration testing. For example, Opus 5's safeguards prevent its use for scanning vulnerabilities in a compiled software binary. However, it is permitted to search for vulnerabilities within source code, a distinction made because the latter task is more frequently associated with defensive security applications. Anthropic projects that these safety classifiers will engage approximately 85% less often for Opus 5 compared to Fable 5, reflecting a more nuanced and lighter-touch approach to content moderation for the less capable model.

To further enhance the user experience and reduce disruptions from safety classifications, Anthropic is rolling out a new beta feature called Automatic Fallbacks. Users who opt into this feature will have their requests automatically routed to a less powerful model whenever a prompt triggers a safety classifier.
