AFCON 2025 Countdown: Tanzania Coach Braces Up head of Super Eagles Clash

Nigeria is set to commence their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) game against Tanzania in the opening match of Group C, scheduled for tomorrow at the Complexe Sportif de Fès. The Super Eagles, runners-up at the 2023 AFCON, will be eager to secure a winning start against the Taifa Stars as they begin their push for progression to the knockout stage.

Nigeria enters the tournament targeting a fourth AFCON title, having narrowly lost to host Ivory Coast in the final of the previous edition. Their last continental triumph came 12 years ago, and recent setbacks, including failing to qualify for the FIFA World Cup finals for the second consecutive time, have tempered expectations among supporters. Éric Chelle’s side faces further challenges due to key injuries and recent defeats against DR Congo and Egypt, which have contributed to a lower-than-usual level of pre-tournament optimism.

Tanzania, meanwhile, is making their third AFCON finals appearance in the last four editions, having qualified by finishing second in Group H with consecutive victories over Ethiopia and Guinea. Despite this success, head coach Hemed Suleiman was replaced in early November, with Argentine tactician Miguel Gamondi initially appointed. However, Adel Amrouche is now in charge, tasked with leading the Taifa Stars to their first-ever AFCON victory at the tenth attempt. Tanzania’s recent form has been worrying, with no wins in their last seven matches and four consecutive defeats.

In head-to-head meetings, Nigeria has historically dominated Tanzania, winning three of their last five encounters. The most recent competitive fixture saw the Super Eagles claim a narrow 1–0 victory. Tanzania has also struggled offensively against Nigeria, failing to score in three of their last five games against them.

For this crucial Group C opener, Nigeria will be without key players Ola Aina and Benjamin Fredrick, both sidelined through injury and omitted from the AFCON squad. The Super Eagles are expected to line up in a 4-3-3 formation featuring: Nwabali; Osayi-Samuel, Ajayi, Bassey, Sanusi; Ndidi, Onyeka, Iwobi; Chukwueze, Osimhen, Lookman. Tanzania, on the other hand, reports no injury concerns and is expected to field their strongest XI in a 4-2-3-1 formation: Y. Suleiman; Mnoga, Mwamnyeto, D. Job, M. Husseini; Miroshi, Feisal Salum; Msuva, M’Mombwa, Allarakhia; Samatta.

A notable factor for the Taifa Stars is the cold weather conditions in Morocco. Head coach Adel Amrouche has acknowledged that several players are struggling to adapt to the cooler climate in Fès, where Group C matches will be played. Fès is one of the coldest host venues, with daytime temperatures around 14°C (57°F) and nighttime lows dropping to approximately 6°C (43°F). Other host cities vary, with Rabat and Casablanca reaching about 18°C (64°F), Tangier around 15°C (59°F), while Marrakech and Agadir are considerably warmer. Speaking after a training session in Rabat, Amrouche stressed the importance of adaptation, stating, “It’s not an excuse; it’s part of the job.” He added that their earlier training camp in Cairo was similarly cold and expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and positive camp spirit.

This encounter will mark only the second time Tanzania has faced Nigeria at the AFCON, with the Super Eagles having secured a 3–1 victory in their previous meeting at the 1980 tournament opener.

Considering Nigeria’s attacking quality and recent improvements, alongside Tanzania’s defensive resilience, the individual brilliance within the Super Eagles squad is expected to prove decisive. Nigeria’s superior talent should be enough to overcome a determined Tanzanian side. The predicted outcome is Nigeria 2–0 Tanzania, with betting tips favoring a Nigeria win, both teams to score – No, and Under 2.5 goals.
