2027 Election Alert: Parties Demand Urgent AI Manipulation Safeguards!

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed significant concerns regarding the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) to disseminate misinformation and manipulate content in the lead-up to Nigeria's 2027 general elections. Prof. Joash Amupitan, the INEC chairman, warned that rapid advancements in AI could facilitate the swift and sophisticated circulation of manipulated audio, video, and images, posing substantial challenges to election management. In response to these warnings, key political parties—the All Progressives Congress (APC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Labour Party—have urged INEC to establish robust systems capable of guaranteeing credible election outcomes.

INEC, however, clarified its mandate, stating that it lacks the legal authority to punish individuals who deliberately spread false information about the electoral process. Instead, such offenders would be subject to relevant law enforcement agencies under existing cybercrime laws. The commission emphasized its responsibility to provide accurate information and intensify public enlightenment efforts to prevent misinformation from undermining public confidence in the integrity of the 2027 general elections.
