Luxury Redefined: Mercedes-Benz S-Class Crowned 2027 MotorTrend Car of the Year!

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has achieved a significant milestone, being named the 2027 MotorTrend Car of the Year. This accolade underscores its status as an industry benchmark, attributed to a comprehensive overhaul including a new engine, an advanced operating system, cutting-edge hands-free driving capabilities, and unparalleled opulence.

As Mercedes-Benz's flagship sedan since 1972, the S-Class has always walked a delicate line, needing to be both revolutionary and timeless. The brand understands the inherent risk in altering such an iconic model; too much change can alienate loyal customers, while too little risks losing appeal to competitors. The S-Class, positioned at the pinnacle of the lineup, serves as the canvas for Mercedes-Benz to showcase its finest materials and latest technological innovations, catering to a discerning clientele.

For the 2027 model year, the seventh-generation S-Class received a crucial and extensive update. This included the integration of a new V-8 engine and approximately 2,700 new or revised parts. The vehicle also boasts a new infotainment operating system and Mercedes' most recent advancements in driver assistance technology, including its lauded hands-free driving system. Aesthetically, the car now features an enhanced 'star power' look, with a larger front grille adorned with over 50 star logos, and additional stars subtly integrated into the electrochromic sunroof.

Earning the prestigious Golden Calipers for MotorTrend Car of the Year requires more than just being a luxury flagship. The S-Class nameplate itself has a storied, though sometimes elusive, history with this award. Its last victory dates back 46 years to the 1981 Mercedes-Benz 300SD, which was named Import Car of the Year. While it has been a finalist on multiple occasions, notably in 2014 and 2022, this 2027 win marks a triumphant return to the top for the stately sedan.

The 2027 Car of the Year competition was robust, featuring a diverse field of 16 nameplates represented by 22 total variants. Competitors ranged widely, from electric vehicles like the Chevrolet Bolt and Tesla Model 3, to high-performance machines such as the BMW M2 CS, Nissan Z NISMO, and Hyundai Elantra N TCR. The field also included powerful sports cars like the Corvette Grand Sports, Dodge Chargers, and Mustang Dark Horse SC, alongside more conventional sedans, a hot hatch, and even a Chrysler Pacifica minivan. Despite this varied and performance-skewed lineup, the S-Class quickly established itself as the vehicle to beat during evaluations at the Honda Proving Ground.

MotorTrend's Car of the Year selection process is not a direct head-to-head comparison, recognizing the impossibility of pitting disparate vehicle types against each other. Instead, each vehicle is meticulously judged against six core criteria: engineering excellence, advancement in design, value, safety, efficiency, and performance of intended function. The latter criterion assesses how well the car fulfills the purpose its manufacturer intended. For the evaluation, a 2027 Mercedes-Benz S580 4Matic sedan was tested, which, starting at $136,050, was optioned to $180,500. The full S-Class lineup also includes the entry-level S500, priced under $114,000, and will soon expand with the S580e plug-in hybrid.
