Travel Rewards Boost: Marriott and Ethiopian Airlines Team Up for African Travelers

A significant collaboration has been announced between two prominent entities in the global travel industry: Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott International's acclaimed travel program, and Ethiopian Airlines, Africa's largest carrier. This partnership is set to revolutionize loyalty rewards for millions of travelers, enabling members to seamlessly earn and exchange points and miles across both hotel stays and flights. The agreement, effective immediately, establishes a direct link between Marriott Bonvoy and Ethiopian Airlines' loyalty program, ShebaMiles.

Members enrolled in both loyalty schemes now possess the flexibility to convert ShebaMiles into Marriott Bonvoy points, thereby unlocking access to a wide array of benefits including hotel bookings, room upgrades, and other travel perks within Marriott's extensive global portfolio. Conversely, Marriott Bonvoy members can transfer their accumulated points into ShebaMiles, facilitating flight bookings through Ethiopian Airlines and its vast partner network. This initiative effectively connects Ethiopian Airlines' comprehensive route network of over 145 destinations with Marriott Bonvoy's worldwide presence, which encompasses more than 30 hotel brands and approximately 10,000 properties, offering clients unparalleled flexibility in planning journeys combining air travel and accommodation.

Andrew Watson, Chief Commercial Officer for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Marriott International, underscored the strategic significance of Africa in the company's expansion plans, identifying it as one of the fastest-growing travel regions globally. He stated that the partnership reflects Marriott's dedication to providing rewarding experiences, granting travelers the freedom to utilize loyalty benefits according to their individual preferences, whether earning miles during hotel stays or using points for flights.

From the airline's perspective, Rahel Assefa, Ethiopian Airlines Group Vice President of Marketing, emphasized the partnership's role in expanding service offerings for ShebaMiles members. She articulated that this collaboration is integral to a broader vision aimed at enhancing the overall travel experience and fostering strategic relationships with partners committed to exceeding customer expectations. She noted that access to Marriott Bonvoy's global hotel network creates new avenues for members to earn and redeem miles across numerous touchpoints and destinations, both within Africa and internationally.

The program offers attractive conversion rates: ShebaMiles members can convert their miles to Marriott Bonvoy points at a ratio of two to one. Marriott Bonvoy members transferring points to ShebaMiles do so at a three-to-one rate, with an appealing bonus of 5,000 ShebaMiles awarded for every 60,000 points transferred in a single transaction. Furthermore, members staying at participating Marriott properties have the option to earn up to two miles per US dollar spent, or continue accumulating Marriott Bonvoy points as per usual. The only prerequisite to access these comprehensive benefits is enrollment in both loyalty programs, with no account linking required, simplifying the process for travelers.

The value of this partnership is further amplified by Ethiopian Airlines' membership in Star Alliance, the world's largest airline network. This affiliation grants ShebaMiles and Marriott Bonvoy members (who convert their points) access to flight redemptions and cabin upgrades across 25 Star Alliance partner airlines, collectively serving over 1,150 destinations globally. This extensive reach includes frequent connections from Addis Ababa to major international cities such as Mumbai, Paris, London, Washington, and Beijing.

For travel businesses operating across sub-Saharan Africa, the Marriott Bonvoy and Ethiopian Airlines partnership emerges as a powerful instrument for client retention and satisfaction. The capacity to bundle loyalty benefits across both flights and hotels adds tangible value to travel packages, thereby strengthening the appeal of both brands in an increasingly competitive market. As traveler expectations continue to evolve, such strategic alliances are poised to become indispensable features of the travel industry landscape.
