Slack Gets AI Overhaul: Salesforce Rolls Out 30 Game-Changing Features!

Salesforce, the prominent cloud software giant, is strategically reorienting its business model around artificial intelligence. This focus culminated in a recent unveiling in San Francisco, where CEO Marc Benioff and his team introduced a significantly updated version of Slack, now imbued with a comprehensive suite of new AI features. The cornerstone of these enhancements is a substantial 'glow-up' for Slackbot, its integrated AI agent.

These 30 new features, slated for release in the coming months, build upon a January update that already endowed Slackbot with agentic capabilities. Previously, Slackbot gained the ability to draft emails, meticulously schedule meetings, and efficiently sift through a user's inbox to locate specific information. The most noteworthy addition announced is the introduction of 'reusable AI-skills'. This innovative functionality allows users to precisely define specific tasks for Slackbot, which, once created, can be consistently applied across a diverse array of scenarios and contexts within the platform. Salesforce indicates that Slackbot comes equipped with a pre-built library of these AI-skills, yet users retain the flexibility to create and customize their own versions, thereby significantly streamlining workflows and reducing manual effort for employees.

To illustrate the practical application of these skills, consider a scenario where a user can initiate a complex task with a simple command in Slack, such as "create a budget" for an upcoming event. Upon receiving this prompt, Slackbot is designed to aggregate all pertinent information from the company's various Slack channels, as well as any connected external applications or data sources, to formulate a coherent and actionable plan. Following this, the bot will autonomously arrange a meeting to discuss the proposed plan, intelligently inviting relevant employees based on their designated titles and roles.

Furthermore, Slackbot has been upgraded to function as an MCP (Model Context Protocol) client. This advancement means it can seamlessly connect to and orchestrate interactions with a multitude of outside services and tools. A key integration in this regard is with Agentforce, Salesforce’s own AI agent development platform, which was launched in 2024. Through this sophisticated connection, Slackbot can effectively "route work or prompt questions to Agentforce or any agent or app in your enterprise," as described by the company. This capability ensures that the agent can identify the most relevant and efficient pathway for information, all without requiring human intervention.

Rob Seaman, Slack’s interim CEO and former chief product officer, also highlighted additional new functionalities. Slackbot is now capable of transcribing meetings in real-time and subsequently generating concise summaries. Should a meeting participant become disengaged and miss critical details, they can simply instruct Slackbot to produce a detailed recap of the meeting, including any specific action items or responsibilities assigned to them. Beyond internal Slack operations, the AI agent can now extend its reach to monitor desktop activities. Salesforce enumerates examples of the data it can draw upon, including "your deals, your conversations, your calendar, and your habits." Leveraging this contextual understanding, Slackbot can proactively offer actionable suggestions or draft follow-up communications for critical tasks. Seaman emphasized that robust privacy protections are inherently built into this design, affording users the power to adjust permissions according to their preferences.

In essence, Salesforce is clearly endeavoring to expand Slack’s utility far beyond its foundational role as an enterprise communication tool. The strategic objective is to position it as a more versatile and indispensable platform, capable of managing a broader spectrum of critical business tasks. The overarching ambition appears to be that, by thoroughly integrating advanced AI capabilities, Slack can evolve into an integral and essential component of enterprise users' core business processes. Marc Benioff, reflecting on the journey during his keynote, remarked on the "incredible journey" since Salesforce's acquisition of Slack five years prior, noting that it had resulted in "two and a half times revenue growth." He further added, "We have about a million businesses running on Slack. It’s been a huge growth story."
