Tragedy Strikes: Nigerian Medical Student Killed in Ukraine Airstrike Days Before Graduation!

Nnani Adaobi Marian, a 23-year-old Nigerian medical graduate, tragically died after sustaining severe injuries in a Russian airstrike on Kharkiv, Ukraine. The incident, which occurred on June 29, 2026, involved Russian forces dropping aerial bombs on the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv. Ms. Nnani, a graduate of Kharkiv National Medical University, was initially treated in Kharkiv and later in Germany, but succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.

Kharkiv National Medical University confirmed her death in a statement, remembering her as a bright, sincere, and kind-hearted individual. The university highlighted her ability to connect with people, her thirst for knowledge, and her dedication to helping others. At the time of the attack, Adaobi and her friend, Fatima Huseynova, were reportedly en route to a photoshoot for their upcoming graduation. Fatima Huseynova died at the scene, and a total of 12 people were injured in the airstrike.

The Russian Embassy in Nigeria responded to reports of Ms. Nnani's death, issuing a statement via its official handle on Tuesday. While expressing deep and sincere condolences to her family and friends, the Embassy emphasized that there was no confirmed information on whose actions truly caused the student's death. It suggested that the chaotic operation of Ukrainian air defense is often the primary cause of civilian casualties.

The Embassy further reiterated that Russian Armed Forces conduct strikes precisely at military installations of the Ukrainian regime and never target civilians or social infrastructure. It criticized Nigerian media for allegedly publishing one-sided and biased information, accusing the Russian Federation without documented proof, while simultaneously ignoring or suppressing credible evidence of what it described as terrorist actions by Ukrainian authorities. The Embassy specifically cited an incident on May 22, 2026, where it claimed 21 young students were killed in a deliberate terrorist attack by the Kiev junta on the Lugansk State Pedagogical University college in Starobelsk, noting that Nigerian media had reportedly ignored this information.

In light of these events, the Federal government of Nigeria announced that it is in contact with relevant authorities and Nigeria’s Missions in Ukraine and Germany. The government is working to verify the circumstances surrounding the incident and to provide necessary consular assistance to Ms. Nnani's family.
