Orlando Pirates Player Exodus: Fans Baffled as Stars Leave in Droves!
Orlando Pirates are undertaking a massive squad overhaul, releasing 12-13 players, including a major European sale of Relebohile Mofokeng. The club faces fan backlash over the controversial departure of defender Thabiso Sesane, amidst other significant transfers to rival PSL clubs and overseas opportunities.
Orlando Pirates are undergoing a significant squad overhaul, having officially parted ways with 12 to 13 players as part of their rebuild ahead of the new campaign. This widespread departure includes a major European sale, several transfers to rival Betway Premiership clubs, and some players seeking opportunities overseas or as free agents. The club has also made seven new signings, indicating a comprehensive reshaping of its roster.
The most high-profile departure is undoubtedly Relebohile Mofokeng, who completed a move to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium. The gifted attacker, an academy graduate and a "Bafana Bafana sensation," is the latest talent to secure a move to Europe, following in the footsteps of legends like Percy Tau.
A point of significant contention and widespread frustration among supporters is the decision to release defender Thabiso Sesane. The 26-year-old centre-back had a breakthrough campaign in 2024, establishing himself as a key figure in Pirates' defence before his season was cut short by injury. Although he recovered by December and featured in the Black Label Cup, he did not make an official appearance in the 2025/26 season. Fans have vehemently questioned the club's logic, particularly in light of retaining older defender Tapelo Xoki, who is over 30 and saw limited game time. Many believe Sesane still had much to offer and that a loan move would have been more sensible if game time was the concern, arguing he is entering his prime. His absence due to injury also notably paved the way for Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s emergence, who helped Pirates win two trophies before moving to Chicago Fire.
Sesane, along with midfielder Selaelo Rasebotja, has joined newly-promoted Siwelele FC. Other key departures to rival PSL clubs include Siyabonga Ndlozi and Gomolemo Khoto to Sekhukhune United, Seth Green and Bandile Shandu to Durban City FC, and Thabiso Lebitso to Stellenbosch FC. Sonwabo Khumalo and Blessing Ngiba have both signed for Midlands Wanderers FC in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Overseas moves also continued, with former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sipho Mbule sealing a move to Zakho FC in Iraq, offering him an opportunity to revive his career. Tshegofatso Mabasa was released as a free agent, while Karim Kimvuidi and Gilberto, who struggled to adapt to South African football, also departed. The club's actions have sparked considerable debate among the fanbase, who are keen to see if these extensive changes will lead to a successful season for the Buccaneers.
