The tragic death of 29-year-old engineer Charles Amissah has brought Ghana's healthcare system under renewed scrutiny. A government-appointed committee concluded that Amissah died from medical neglect and denial of emergency care after being turned away by three major hospitals in Accra: the Police Hospital, Greater Accra Regional Hospital, and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. This incident occurred after Amissah was involved in a hit-and-run accident at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Overpass.
