Orbih Unveils Ambitious Blueprint to Revolutionize Nigerian Badminton

Francis Orbih, the President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), has unveiled an ambitious long-term development strategy aimed at elevating Nigerian badminton to a prominent position on both continental and global stages. This comprehensive plan focuses on aggressive grassroots expansion, robust coaches’ education, and dedicated umpire development.

Orbih shared these strategic insights on Wednesday during the opening ceremony of the BFN’s two-day retreat, held at the ANOCA House Conference Room in Abuja. The retreat brought together board members, technical experts, and various stakeholders to collectively chart a new course for the sport in Nigeria. Speaking passionately about the future, Orbih emphasized the federation's commitment to constructing a sustainable framework designed to yield tangible results within the next two to three years. He underscored that the retreat was crucial to ensure the federation operates with a well-defined developmental roadmap, asserting that “when you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

To guide these discussions and formulate practical strategies, the federation has assembled a team of experts and resource persons. Orbih stressed that the BFN would transition from a passive administrative approach to actively pursuing deliberate and measurable goals throughout its tenure. He stated, “We are not just going to vote, announce results and allow four years to pass by. We want to be intentional about what we want to achieve.”

A cornerstone of the federation’s vision is grassroots development, with plans to vigorously expand badminton programs in schools and local communities nationwide. Orbih highlighted the critical role of developing coaches and umpires, deeming them essential for the future success of the game. The BFN President also proudly recalled the increasing international recognition for Nigerian officials, citing the historic invitation of a Nigerian umpire to officiate at the World Junior Championships in India last year—a significant milestone for the federation. Moving forward, the BFN aims to secure greater international representation for Nigerian technical officials, emphasizing that proper planning and preparation are vital to achieving this.

Furthermore, a broader aspect of the federation's vision involves preparing more Nigerians for leadership roles within African and global badminton structures. Orbih, currently Nigeria’s sole council member in the Badminton World Federation, believes that many capable individuals within the Nigerian badminton community require only adequate mentoring and preparation to succeed internationally. He declared, “We want more Nigerians to lead African badminton bodies and contribute globally when opportunities come. That preparation must start now.”

Orbih concluded by commending the National Sports Commission and the Nigerian Olympic Committee for their unwavering support to sports federations. He reiterated that federations must also proactively fulfill their roles in driving sports development. The retreat, he noted, was specifically designed to align the BFN’s programs with the broader agenda of the National Sports Commission, thereby ensuring Nigeria can compete more effectively at both continental and international levels.
