Super Eagles Triumph: Nigeria Dominates Iran in World Cup Warm-Up

Several African nations participated in friendly football matches on Friday, with Nigeria's Super Eagles among the teams to secure a positive result. These games offered valuable preparation and highlighted various team performances across the continent.
Austria delivered a dominant performance in Vienna, ruthlessly defeating Ghana 5-1. Marcel Sabitzer opened the scoring from a penalty in the 12th minute after a handball. Michael Gregoritsch doubled the lead in the 51st minute, followed by Stefan Posch's powerful header. Despite a brief response from Ghana's Ayew in the 77th minute, Austria quickly restored their three-goal cushion through Carney Chukwuemeka, who scored his first international goal just two minutes later. Nicolas Seiwald sealed the comprehensive victory with a fifth goal deep into stoppage time, exposing significant defensive frailties for Ghana.
In Sydney, Australia secured a narrow but valuable 1-0 win over Cameroon. The match was largely cautious and lacked rhythm in the first half, played on a slick surface. Australia introduced debutants Lucas Herrington and Deni Juric. The tempo improved in the second half, especially with the introduction of Nestory Irankunda. Australia missed a golden opportunity in the 70th minute when Ajdin Hrustic's penalty was saved by Devis Epassy. However, Jordan Bos finally broke the deadlock in the 85th minute, reacting quickest to a pass from Paul Okon-Engstler after a defensive lapse from Cameroon.
Liechtenstein recorded a rare and historic 1-0 victory over Tanzania in Kigali. Tanzania controlled possession but struggled to break down Liechtenstein's well-organized defensive block. The decisive moment came in the 55th minute when Ferhat Saglam finished clinically after being set up by captain Nicolas Hasler. Liechtenstein's defensive discipline held firm under late pressure, securing only their fourth win in six years.
Estonia edged Kenya in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time, also in Kigali. Estonia took the lead in the 21st minute through Tanel Tammik. Kenya responded strongly in the second half, with Ryan Ogam equalizing in the 51st minute. Despite Kenya dominating possession and creating better chances, Estonia's defensive organization ensured the match went to penalties. Estonia ultimately triumphed 5-4 in the tense shootout, following misses from Kenya's Mohammed Bajaber and Richard Odada.
Uzbekistan came from behind to secure an impressive 3-1 victory over Gabon in Tashkent. Gabon made a bright start, taking the lead in the 6th minute through Teddy Averlant. However, Eldor Shomurodov equalized for Uzbekistan just eight minutes later. In the second half, debutant Jakhongir Urozov put the hosts ahead in the 59th minute and later made a crucial defensive clearance. Substitute Alisher Odilov sealed the win in stoppage time as Gabon pushed for an equalizer.
Chile staged an impressive comeback to defeat Cape Verde 4-2, overturning a halftime deficit. Ben Brereton Díaz gave Chile an early lead in the 16th minute, but Cape Verde responded quickly with goals from Dailon Livramento and Sidny Cabral, taking a 2-1 lead by halftime. The turning point occurred just before the break when Cape Verde's Diney Borges was dismissed after a VAR review. Chile dominated the second half, with Maximiliano Gutiérrez equalizing with a stunning long-range strike in the 58th minute, followed by Felipe Loyola putting them ahead nine minutes later. Substitute Gonzalo Tapia sealed the victory in the 79th minute.
South Africa were held to a 1-1 draw by Panama despite dominating large portions of the match in Durban. Panama took the lead in the 23rd minute through Yoel Bárcenas. South Africa equalized in the 48th minute when Oswin Appollis finished a well-worked move. Despite registering significantly more shots and controlling possession, South Africa's lack of clinical finishing and Panama's disciplined defense, coupled with a strong goalkeeping performance, prevented them from finding a winner.
Ecuador and Morocco played out a competitive 1-1 draw in a tactically rich encounter in New Jersey. Morocco took the lead in the 38th minute through Amine Adli, with their midfield, led by Sofyan Amrabat, controlling the first half. Ecuador responded with greater intensity after the break, and Kevin Rodríguez equalized in the 64th minute with a header from a set piece. Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made a crucial late save to deny Enner Valencia, ensuring the match ended level.
Nigeria's Super Eagles secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Iran in Antalya, Turkey, delivering a disciplined and efficient performance despite the absence of key players like Victor Osimhen and Calvin Bassey. Moses Simon broke the deadlock in the 6th minute with a low finish after a precise pass from Samuel Chukwueze. Akor Adams doubled Nigeria's advantage in the 51st minute, showing composure to slot the ball past the goalkeeper. Iran responded in the 67th minute when Mehdi Taremi scored from close range after a corner, setting up a tense finish, but Nigeria's defensive organization held firm.
Following this victory, several Super Eagles players stood out. Alex Iwobi, the Fulham midfielder, continued his impressive form, picking up the ball in tight spaces and piercing the Iranian defense with brilliant passes. His technical ability and line-breaking passes, including one that led to Akor Adams' goal, highlighted his role as a consistent creative outlet in Eric Chelle's diamond setup. Ademola Lookman, playing in the number ten role, created chances for the team, setting up Nigeria's second goal for Akor Adams. Akor Adams himself was a standout, leading the attack in Osimhen's absence, demonstrating movement, strength, pressing, and scoring a brilliant dink at the start of the second half, proving he can lead the line.
Other winners from the Iran game included Maduka Okoye, who returned to the national team with a calm and composed performance, making key saves despite conceding a goal, and effectively re-opening the competition for the number one shirt. Debutants Emmanuel Fernandez and Chibuike Nwaiwu also impressed. Rangers defender Fernandez, coming on at halftime for Semi Ajayi, delivered a solid display at the heart of Nigeria's defense, winning aerial duels and making key clearances. His performance comes amid reported transfer interest from clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich. Trabzonspor's Nwaiwu, a late replacement for the injured Calvin Bassey, came on in the 57th minute for the injured Igoh Ogbu and settled into the game, helping the team maintain their lead without conceding an equalizer.
Conversely, Stanley Nwabali was highlighted as a
