Super Eagles Thrash Tunisia 3-2, Soar Into AFCON Last 16

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have successfully secured their spot in the last 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, following a thrilling 3-2 victory over Tunisia. This crucial win in Fez capped off a strong start to their tournament campaign, which began with a narrow 2-1 triumph against Tanzania on Tuesday.
Ahead of the decisive clash against the Carthage Eagles, head coach Éric Chelle made strategic adjustments to his starting line-up and formation, shifting from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-3. As anticipated, Stanley Nwabali maintained his position in goal. The defense featured Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, and Calvin Bassey, with Bruno Onyemaechi stepping in for Zaidu Sanusi at right-back. The midfield trio comprised Captain Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, and Alex Iwobi, providing a strong core. Upfront, Victor Osimhen was supported by Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams, forming a potent attacking force.
The match itself was a pulsating encounter. Nigeria took control just before half-time when Victor Osimhen opened the scoring in the 44th minute, heading home from a well-delivered cross by Ademola Lookman, giving the Super Eagles a deserved 1-0 lead at the break. Nigeria continued their dominance early in the second half, with captain Wilfred Ndidi powering a header into the net in the 50th minute from a precise delivery, extending their advantage to 2-0 and firmly shifting the momentum. The Super Eagles' slick attacking play produced a third goal in the 67th minute, as Ademola Lookman showcased composure and class to finish off a flowing team move, leaving Tunisia reeling.
However, Tunisia refused to capitulate quietly. Montassar Talbi pulled one back for the North African side with a powerful header in the 74th minute, reducing the deficit. The tension escalated when Ali Abdi converted a penalty in the 87th minute, making the score 3-2 and setting up a nervy finish. Despite Tunisia's late fight-back, Nigeria held firm to secure a vital victory.
This result provides Nigeria with six points from two matches, virtually guaranteeing their progression to the AFCON 2025 round of 16. It also delivers a significant morale boost as they aim for a deep run in the tournament hosted in Morocco. For Tunisia, who remain second in Group C with three points (after having thrashed Uganda 3-0 in their opening fixture), their fate now hinges on other results to determine their qualification prospects.
