Super Eagles Star Victor Osimhen Unveils Tragic Personal Story and Fuels Transfer Speculation
)
Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen has recently been the subject of significant attention, both for his impressive performances on the pitch and for deeply personal revelations about the impact of his father's passing, which occurred six years ago. Currently a prominent figure in European football, Osimhen is also at the center of major transfer speculation as the summer window approaches, with elite clubs keen on securing his signature.
Osimhen recounted a harrowing experience from 2020, during his tenure with Lille in Ligue 1, when he was tragically prevented from traveling to see his dying father. His father passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2020. At the time, Osimhen expressed his grief succinctly on social media, stating, “RIP Dad. No words to describe this feeling.” Years later, speaking on the Players' Tribune, Osimhen articulated the profound emotional distress he endured, emphasizing his regret over not being able to say a final goodbye in person.
The Nigerian international revealed that his club, Lille, prioritized their business interests over his urgent need to be with his family during such a critical time. His father's health had begun to decline after Osimhen's move from Wolfsburg to Lille. During the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, when football was shut down and airports were closed, his father was hospitalized. Stuck in France, Osimhen desperately tried to arrange a private flight to Nigeria, even obtaining clearance from aviation authorities.
Despite his fervent pleas and constant calls to his agent, begging to leave as his father's condition worsened, he was met with delay tactics. Osimhen understood this as "the dark side of football," realizing that the club and his former agent were discussing a potential transfer and saw him as an asset to be sold. The waiting plunged him into a state of panic and sleepless nights. The news of his father's death came abruptly one morning; after stepping out of the shower, he was overcome by a premonition, soon confirmed by 20 missed calls from his family.
Upon learning his father had passed, Osimhen reacted with intense grief and rage, throwing his phone and destroying his house. His neighbors, whom he considered family during his solitary time in France, intervened to calm him down, preventing him from "doing something stupid." This profound loss, particularly the guilt of not being by his father's side while other family members were present, led him to question the very essence of football, realigning his life's priorities towards family.
In his current career trajectory, the 26-year-old striker, now with Galatasaray, has reignited significant interest from top European clubs. Atletico Madrid has maintained a long-standing interest, with manager Diego Simeone reportedly viewing Osimhen as an ideal fit for his tactical system. Simeone values Osimhen's pace, physical strength, relentless movement, and clinical finishing, traits that make him a highly sought-after number nine in a market scarce of proven world-class options.
However, the transfer landscape has recently shifted with reports from Visajes Media indicating that Paris Saint-Germain has decisively entered the race. PSG boss Luis Enrique has reportedly identified Osimhen as his primary target to lead the attacking line next season, aiming to bolster the French champions' offense with a clinical finisher. PSG's substantial financial power and status as a major European club could position them as frontrunners in this high-stakes pursuit. As multiple football heavyweights circle, Victor Osimhen is undoubtedly shaping up to be one of the most prominent names of the upcoming summer transfer window.
