Steve Kerr on Kuminga's Future and Spoelstra's Advice

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is preparing for the possibility of forward Jonathan Kuminga's departure as he becomes a restricted free agent this offseason. In an interview, Kerr expressed a good relationship with Kuminga, emphasizing that any potential move isn't due to dissatisfaction but rather a desire to find the best fit. Kerr acknowledges Kuminga's need to find where he best fits, potentially leading him to consider opportunities elsewhere.

Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 47 games during the 2024-25 season, shooting 45.4% from the field. Despite showing promise, Kuminga experienced inconsistent playing time, impacting his negotiation position for his next contract. As a rising young player, Kuminga seeks a solid role with guaranteed minutes, which may influence his decision to explore options beyond the Warriors.

The Golden State Warriors' acquisition of Jimmy Butler also raised questions, particularly regarding Butler's transition from Erik Spoelstra's coaching. Despite initial rumors of Butler's reluctance, Kerr had no concerns after trading for Butler. Spoelstra assured Kerr that Butler would be a great fit. Butler swiftly agreed to a two-year, $111 million contract extension shortly after being traded to the Warriors.

Kerr and Spoelstra's relationship, developed over years of coaching and their time together with USA's Men's National Basketball Team, contributed to the smooth transition. Butler, during his introductory press conference, took a playful jab at the Miami Heat, expressing his excitement to play basketball with enjoyment and without feeling like he's doing cardio all game.
