Austin Reaves Finishes Fifth in MIP Voting

Austin Reaves experienced a significant breakthrough during the 2024-25 NBA season, transitioning from an undrafted rookie to a player with All-Star potential. Initially the third option behind LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Reaves elevated his game even after Anthony Davis was traded for Luka Doncic. Despite James and Doncic dominating offensive touches, they entrusted Reaves with scoring and playmaking responsibilities, which he fulfilled admirably.
Reaves not only improved his statistical output across the board but also maintained high efficiency from all areas of the court. His performance earned him recognition as a quality starter and hinted at his potential to become an All-Star. Reaves' impressive 2024-25 campaign was acknowledged when he finished fifth in voting for the Kia NBA Most Improved Player Award, even receiving some first-place votes. According to NBA PR, a global media panel of 100 voters selected Dyson Daniels as the winner with 332 total points, while Reaves garnered three first-place votes, accumulating 39 total points.
Ivica Zubac and Cade Cunningham secured second and third place, respectively, reflecting their own stellar seasons. Reaves stood out as the only undrafted player on the list, underscoring his skill and dedication. The Lakers recognized Reaves' value, appreciating his seamless fit alongside star players and his ability to lead the team during crucial moments. While some argued that Reaves benefited from the defensive focus on James and Doncic, his performance demonstrated his capability to excel independently.
Phil Handy, a former assistant coach, recognized Austin Reaves' potential even before his rookie season, indicating the early awareness of his capabilities within the Lakers organization.
