Murken Resigns, Hernandez Lands at D2 Minot State

Matt Murken, the long-time coach of Minot State men’s basketball, has resigned to pursue a coaching opportunity at the NCAA Division I level. The announcement was made by Kevin Harmon, Minot State’s Vice President for Student Affairs and Intercollegiate Athletics. Harmon expressed gratitude for Murken's leadership and success in elevating the program to a national level, while also supporting Murken's aspirations. Murken leaves Minot State after 13 seasons, amassing 186 career wins.

Murken reflected on his time at Minot State, expressing gratitude to the players and coaches who contributed to building the program. He highlighted the rewriting of the Beaver basketball record books and the 23 players who went on to professional careers. He emphasized the positive impact of the program on the players' lives and their contributions to their communities.

The 2024-25 season was particularly successful, with the Beavers setting program records for wins (26-10), points (2,895), rebounds (1,311), 3-pointers made (327), and total field goals made (1,049). The team achieved a program-best No. 4 national ranking in the NABC Coach Top 25 poll and made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA National Tournament.

Murken took over the Minot State men’s basketball program in 2012-13, the Beavers’ first season as a full NCAA Division II member, after two seasons as head coach at Jamestown. His overall career record stands at 232-196, with a 186-180 record in 13 seasons at Minot State. He expressed his deep connection to the Minot community, highlighting the support from the university, schools, and churches.

Rylee Hernandez, newly hired assistant coach, will serve as interim coach while a national search for a new head coach is conducted. Harmon emphasized the dedication to finding a coach who can lead the program to further accomplishments.

Prior to joining Minot State, Hernandez served as the head coach at Seward County Community College for four seasons. He also spent five seasons as the head coach for the Williston State College men’s team, leading them to the 2019 District XI Championship and the NJCAA National Tournament. Murken praised Hernandez's experience, communication skills, and recruiting abilities.
