AI's Potential in Reducing NBA Achilles Tendon Injuries

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is currently facing a significant challenge: a record surge in Achilles tendon injuries, with seven documented cases during the 2024-25 season. This alarming increase, up from zero in the previous season, has prompted serious concern across the league and led to a strategic pivot towards advanced technological solutions. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has publicly addressed the crisis, announcing the league's ambitious plan to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its injury prevention and management protocols. The primary goal is to proactively safeguard players and mitigate the risk of these potentially career-ending setbacks.
The unprecedented spike in Achilles injuries in the 2024-25 season saw several high-profile players affected. During the regular season, Indiana Pacers forwards James Wiseman and Isaiah Jackson, New Orleans guard Dejounte Murray, and Miami’s Dru Smith all suffered Achilles injuries. The playoffs brought further setbacks with Boston’s Jayson Tatum, Milwaukee’s Damian Lillard, and Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton joining the grim list. This sharp rise has reignited discussions about the NBA’s demanding schedule, with critics questioning whether the 82-game regular season and subsequent intense playoffs contribute to the physical toll on players.
Despite concerns about the league's schedule, Commissioner Silver defended the current format, noting the absence of Achilles injuries in the 2023-24 season under the same circumstances. He emphasized that the league had already convened a panel of experts to address the issue even before Tyrese Haliburton's most recent rupture. Silver highlighted the potential of AI to revolutionize injury prevention by analyzing vast amounts of player data. "I’m hopeful that by analysing more data and looking at patterns, this is one area where AI - which people say will transform many fields - can help," Silver stated, elaborating that AI can scrutinize every game a player has participated in to identify patterns that might predispose them to an Achilles injury.
The application of AI in curbing Achilles tendon injuries involves a multi-faceted approach. By processing extensive player data, including biomechanics, workload, and movement patterns, AI systems can identify subtle early signs of strain or fatigue that could escalate into serious injuries. The integration of wearable sensors and smart video analysis tools provides real-time insights into player performance and physical stress. This real-time data allows trainers and medical staff to make timely adjustments to player workloads and correct potentially risky movements. Furthermore, AI is instrumental in developing personalized recovery and prevention plans tailored to individual player needs, thereby reducing the risk of re-injury. While AI cannot entirely eliminate every injury, it offers powerful tools for teams to better protect their players through proactive, data-driven decision-making, transforming how the NBA approaches player health and safety.
