Star-Studded Tribute to Eddie Murphy at AFI Life Achievement Gala

Hollywood legend Eddie Murphy was honored with the 51st AFI Life Achievement Award, the American Film Institute's highest accolade, during a star-studded ceremony at the Dolby Theater on Saturday night. The prestigious award was presented to Murphy by director Spike Lee, who praised the comedian and actor for his unwavering authenticity, dedication to family, and his enduring status as a "great artist" throughout his distinguished career.

The event drew an A-list gathering of stars, all eager to celebrate Murphy's monumental achievement. Among those who delivered heartfelt speeches and shared personal anecdotes were Tracy Morgan, Dave Chappelle, Bill Burr, Chris Rock, Arsenio Hall, Judge Reinhold, Kenan Thompson, Robert Townsend, Eva Longoria, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Their tributes underscored the profound impact Murphy's work and legacy have had on their lives and the entertainment industry.

Dave Chappelle, who co-starred with Murphy in "The Nutty Professor," recounted his admiration for Murphy as a childhood hero, particularly recalling how he watched "Raw" daily at 14, recognizing its crucial significance. Chappelle also shared a recent, emotional conversation with Murphy about his late brother, Charlie, and playfully proposed that Murphy take Charlie's part if a "Chappelle's Show" movie ever materialized.

Audiences were also treated to a surprise appearance by Stevie Wonder, who humorously recalled first learning of Murphy through his imitations on "Saturday Night Live." Despite the playful jab about being made fun of as a blind man, Wonder expressed deep admiration for Murphy's unique ability to evoke "belly laughs" that ease pain, build bridges, and diffuse tense situations. "That is power, that is courage and that is the funny man, my friend," Wonder concluded.

The surprises continued with Mike Myers, who appeared on stage in full green "Shrek" makeup, paying homage to the 2001 hit film where Murphy voiced the beloved character, Donkey. Myers lauded Murphy as one of the greatest, expressing immense pride in having had the opportunity to work alongside him, comparing the experience to working with cinematic legends like Charlie Chaplin, Alec Guinness, or Peter Sellers. Jennifer Hudson further delighted the audience with a musical medley from "Dreamgirls," the 2006 film where she co-starred with Murphy, which earned him a Golden Globe and SAG Award for best supporting actor.

Upon accepting his honor, Eddie Murphy shared that the timing felt perfect, as he had recently welcomed his first grandson and third granddaughter, and celebrated his 65th birthday earlier in the month. Feeling a shower of "blessings," Murphy's classic humor emerged as he joked about what would have transpired if AFI had delayed his award until his 90s, eliciting uproarious laughter from the crowd. He concluded his speech on an emotional note, expressing profound gratitude for a night he would cherish forever and nearly tearing up backstage.

Murphy's illustrious career spans decades, marked by iconic roles in hit films such as "48 Hrs.," "Trading Places," "Dr. Dolittle," "Coming to America," and the "Beverly Hills Cop" franchise. He began his journey as a stand-up comedian in the 1980s, joining the cast of "Saturday Night Live" at just 19 years old, where he created unforgettable characters like Velvet Jones, Buckwheat, and Gumby.

Earlier in the evening, Oscar-winning cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw was presented with the Franklin J. Schaffner alumni medal. Arkapaw shared how Murphy's work significantly influenced her trajectory, making her feel that the theater was a place of escape and enjoyment, even before she envisioned a career in film. The 50th AFI Life Achievement Award was previously bestowed upon Francis Ford Coppola in 2025, with past recipients including Julie Andrews, George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Martin Scorsese, and Steven Spielberg. "The 51st AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Eddie Murphy" is set to premiere on Netflix on May 31, marking the first time the AFI special will be available for streaming on the platform.
