Shockwave: Doja Cat Considers 3-Year Music Hiatus to 'Do Whatever' She Pleases

Doja Cat, a prominent artist with five studio albums and numerous Billboard Hot 100 hits, has expressed her contemplation of taking a significant break from music. In a recent Elle UK cover story, the rapper revealed her desire to step away for a few years, citing the importance of making time for her other passions, such as painting. She emphasized her commitment to prioritizing these breaks, stating, "I demand time from my team. They've helped me to find pockets between the really busy moments."

Elaborating on her plans, Doja Cat mentioned, "I think I want to take three years off. I want to just do whatever." Her current personal projects include working on another mural and finally furnishing the upper level of her house, a space she notes has been empty for "four years or five."

Despite her thoughts on a hiatus, Doja Cat remains active in her music career. Her latest album, "Vie," released in 2025, reached an impressive No. 4 on the Billboard 200. She is currently on her "Tour Ma Vie World Tour," which commenced in November and is slated to conclude at the beginning of December. Following a brief month-long respite, she is scheduled to return to touring with a performance in Kigali, Rwanda.

Beyond her career trajectory, Doja Cat also shared insights into her artistic approach and personal life. She discussed her signature sense of humor in her music, drawing parallels to artists like Nicki Minaj, Drake, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, and Lil Wayne. "These people are not comedians, but they are," she explained, adding, "They could write a stand-up set if they wanted to, but music is much more fun." She credits Jay-Z for teaching her the importance of irony in hip-hop and rap.

Furthermore, Doja Cat opened up about how her recently shared borderline personality disorder diagnosis affects her dating life. She candidly revealed, "If I have a boyfriend, and he leaves just to run errands, my brain thinks he's breaking up with me." She attributed this response to her father having left her when she was a child, and stated, "I have to scrape against it and teach myself that that's not happening to me. I'm safe." The Elle feature also included cover images and photos from her photoshoot.
