Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Makes History, Ties Wilt Chamberlain with Clutch Performance

Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered a monumental performance on Monday night, not only tying a historic NBA record held by Wilt Chamberlain but also sealing a dramatic 129-126 victory over the Denver Nuggets with a clutch game-winning shot.
Gilgeous-Alexander's dazzling display markedhis 126th consecutive game scoring at least 20 points, a streak that now stands alongside Chamberlain's legendary run from 1961 to 1963.
The reigning MVP punctuated his record-tying evening by swishing a step-back three-pointer with just 3.3 seconds left on the clock.
This heroics propelled the defending champion Thunder to a crucial win against their Western Conference rivals.
Gilgeous-Alexander finished the game with an impressive 35 points, a career-high 15 assists, and remarkably, zero turnovers.
This stat line places him in an exclusive club, as ESPN Research notes that LeBron James is the only other player to record at least 35 points and 15 assists with no turnovers since statistics were officially tracked in 1977-78, a feat James achieved on March 21, 2018.
Following Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon's missed desperation heave at the buzzer, Gilgeous-Alexander, usually known for his composed demeanor, displayed a rare burst of emotion.
He triumphantly strutted around the Paycom Center court, waving animatedly to the home crowd, a visible celebration that followed his passionate reactions to two critical three-pointers in the final 14 seconds.
"I don't even remember what I was saying," Gilgeous-Alexander remarked, describing the moment that he considered one of the best regular-season performances of his career, which also included nine rebounds.
The night saw Gilgeous-Alexander outduel three-time MVP Nikola Jokic, rekindling a recent rivalry that saw the Thunder emerge victorious in an overtime game just ten nights prior, marred by a flagrant 2 foul on Jokic by Luguentz Dort.
On this occasion, Jokic himself had a stellar triple-double with 32 points, 14 rebounds, and 13 assists, but it was Gilgeous-Alexander who delivered the game's decisive moments.
The closing seconds were a testament to Gilgeous-Alexander's clutch abilities. He drilled what appeared to be a dagger step-back three from the top of the arc with 13.9 seconds remaining, putting the Thunder up by four.
However, the Nuggets swiftly tied the score after Thunder center Jaylin Williams was whistled for a foul on a Jamal Murray screen as Jokic hit a three. A review confirmed Jokic had begun his shooting motion, sending Murray to the line for the tying free throw.
This set the stage for one of the most spectacular clutch plays of Gilgeous-Alexander's career. Receiving the ball near half-court with Denver's Spencer Jones guarding him, Gilgeous-Alexander surveyed the floor, dribbled to the right wing, and noticed Christian Braun ready to help on a drive.
He then created just enough space with a step-back move to his right, launching the winner over Jones' outstretched hand. This shot was strikingly similar to a dagger he had hit in a previous win against the Golden State Warriors.
"Just trusting my work, first and foremost, and then just reading the defense," Gilgeous-Alexander explained.
"Obviously, they were sending two [defenders] basically the whole second half, and I knew if I wanted to get an attempt late, I would have to go quick, go fast. And the deeper I drove, the more bodies would come. Yeah, kind of had no choice."
This marked his third tying or go-ahead field goal in the final five seconds of the fourth quarter or overtime this season, tying for the league lead.
Over the past five seasons, he has made eight go-ahead buckets in the final 10 seconds, three more than any other player.
Thunder coach Mark Daigneaultlauded his star, stating, "Tremendous poise, confidence. He doesn't change his mindset regardless of the circumstance. He doesn't break a sweat doing anything."
Even Nikola Jokic acknowledged the difficulty of SGA's accomplishment: "I don't know that people know how hard it is to do that. To make 20 points in 10 [straight] games, not 120 whatever it is, it's special. He's a special player."
Gilgeous-Alexander completed his 20-point milestone in this game with a step-back three from the top of the arc with 2:27 remaining in the third quarter, extending a streak that the report notes started on November 1, 2024.
While he appreciates the historical significance, Gilgeous-Alexander confessed it's still a lot to process.
"To be honest with you, I try not to even think about it, especially during the season. So much is going on. So many things have to go right for you to get what you ultimately want. That gets 100% of my focus, especially basketball-wise. But obviously, being in a conversation with a guy like that, it's special. It's crazy to think that, [considering] where I was 10 years ago, I'd be here today."
