Rwanda's General Challenges Youth to Drive Development
Brig Gen Patrick Karuretwa has called on young Rwandans to embody active patriotism and contribute to national development. Speaking at the 16th Itorero Indangamirwa cohort, he emphasized strengthening values and civic responsibility as Rwanda approaches Liberation Day.Brigadier General Patrick Karuretwa, the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) Spokesperson and Director General of International Military Cooperation, has urged young Rwandans to redefine patriotism. He called upon them to embrace their roles as active citizens committed to the nation's development, rather than merely passive beneficiaries.
This significant message was delivered on Thursday, July 2, during a lecture to participants of the 16th cohort of Itorero Indangamirwa. The event took place at the RDF Combat Training Centre in Gabiro. The cohort comprises a diverse group of young Rwandans, including those residing abroad, students from international schools operating within Rwanda, and exceptional graduates of the national service program.
Karuretwa's lecture centered on crucial themes such as strengthening Rwandan values, fostering patriotism, developing leadership qualities, and instilling a strong sense of civic responsibility among the youth. This initiative comes as Rwanda prepares to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of its Liberation, known as Kwibohora 32, on July 4.
During his address, Karuretwa posed a thought-provoking question to the participants: "The most important question is no longer, 'What kind of country do I want to live in?' Instead, it is, 'What kind of citizen must I become to build the country I want?'" He underscored Rwanda's remarkable journey over the past three decades, highlighting how the nation's progress serves as a testament to what can be achieved through unwavering unity, resilience, and a collective commitment to rebuilding after adversity.
The comprehensive training program, which commenced on July 1 and is set to conclude on August 10, is designed to equip participants with essential knowledge and values. These include fostering a deep sense of patriotism, discipline, cultural identity, effective leadership skills, and a robust sense of responsibility towards national development.
