RUF Unleashes Beastly 1,000 HP Twin-Turbo Flat-8 Engine
RUF Automobile has unveiled a new twin-turbo flat-8 engine at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, delivering over 1,000 horsepower. This powerful, unique boxer engine is currently a test bed, signaling a potential future production model for the esteemed performance car manufacturer.
Defying the prevailing trend towards electrification in European performance cars, RUF Automobile has unveiled a powerful new twin-turbo flat-8 engine at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This groundbreaking engine, internally dubbed “Erprober” (German for “tester”), boasts an impressive output of over 1,000 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque (approximately 738 lb-ft).
The new powerplant is a 4.8-liter unit in the highly unusual boxer format, where the two cylinder banks operate 180 degrees from one another, creating a distinctive “boxing” motion for the pistons. While RUF is historically associated with building high-performance cars based on Porsche models, and Porsche itself is known for its boxer engines (like in the 911, 718, and 914), RUF now produces its own vehicles. Apart from Subaru, few major manufacturers utilize this horizontally-opposed layout.
Eight-cylinder boxer engines are particularly rare in the automotive world, primarily due to packaging difficulties. Their relatively large size and the complex plumbing required for intake and exhaust across widely spaced cylinder heads make integration with steering and suspension components challenging. This is evidenced by RUF’s decision to stretch its CTR3 mid-engine hypercar-like test vehicle by 3.9 inches to accommodate the larger engine.
Historically, Porsche achieved success with eight-cylinder boxers in racing during the 1960s, even building a pair of 914/8 prototypes in 1969 that never reached production. More recently, Minnesota-based boutique automaker Runge announced a 5.3-liter air-cooled flat-8 engine, the ‘Hetzer’, intended for its R3 supercar and potentially fitting a 964-generation 911.
RUF has installed the “Erprober” engine in the aforementioned stretched test vehicle, pairing it with a six-speed manual transmission. The car made its dynamic debut at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, with racer, drifter, and former Top Gear USA star Tanner Foust taking it for multiple runs. A significant highlight is the engine’s unique sound profile, characterized by a chugging idle, a guttural, Detroit-tinged eight-cylinder growl during revs, complemented by the whistle of its turbochargers.
While RUF’s press release indicates that this “B8” (referring to either the car or the engine) is “not yet a production model” but rather a test bed for an upcoming vehicle, this approach is described as “‘hidden in plain sight’ testing.” This strongly suggests that the flat-8 engine is indeed destined for future RUF production, with its public display at Goodwood serving as a high-profile demonstration of its capabilities.
