Zambia's Vice President Nalumango Cheats Death in Shock Helicopter Incident

Zambia's Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, was involved in a helicopter crash-landing on Thursday while undertaking an official Government visit and campaign activities in Muchinga Province. The incident occurred in Nakonde, shortly after the helicopter took off, approximately two minutes after departing and about 50 metres from the ground. The Vice President, along with all seven other passengers and the flight crew – a total of eight people on board – remarkably escaped without serious injury.

Following the incident, Vice President Nalumango was taken to a nearby medical facility for a routine precautionary assessment. She was later discharged in good health after doctors confirmed her well-being. Speaking after the ordeal, Mrs. Nalumango personally confirmed the crash, stating, "I can confirm that I was involved in a helicopter crash, but all of us, the eight people on board, are fine." She attributed their survival to divine protection, expressing gratitude by saying, "Grateful to God as He is faithful."

The Secretary to the Cabinet, Patrick K. Kangwa, issued an official statement confirming the accident and assuring the nation of the Vice President's safety and that of all on board. The government commended the Zambia Air Force flight crew for their professionalism and calm response during the incident. Additionally, emergency responders and members of the public in Nakonde were praised for their swift assistance, which ensured immediate support for everyone involved.

The helicopter was en route from Nakonde to Isoka District for campaign engagements and another public rally as part of Mrs. Nalumango's ongoing working tour of Muchinga Province, which had commenced on Sunday. Authorities have announced that comprehensive investigations will be conducted to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the accident, in line with standard aviation procedures. The government emphasized that the findings from these investigations would help determine the cause of the incident and ensure continued adherence to aviation safety standards.

Meanwhile, the Government has assured the nation that Vice President Nalumango remains in good health and will continue with her official programme as scheduled. While the incident has garnered nationwide attention, the government has urged the public to remain calm and rely solely on official information as investigations proceed. Security was reportedly tightened around the crash site, restricting media access to the scene of the incident.
