Ripple Shocks Market with Major US Banking Approval – XRP Stumbles!

Ripple has achieved a significant regulatory milestone in the U.S. with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency's final approval to establish a federally supervised national trust bank, RNTB. This new entity will manage reserves for Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin and offer digital asset custody services to institutional clients, marking a major step towards integrating crypto within the traditional financial system. Despite this breakthrough, XRP's price saw no significant rally, as the development is tied to institutional services rather than direct token demand.

Ripple Shocks Market with Major US Banking Approval – XRP Stumbles!

Ripple has achieved a significant regulatory breakthrough in the U.S. market, securing final approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish its own federally supervised national trust bank. This development, announced by Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, marks a major step forward for the company’s institutional goals, particularly in anticipation of its upcoming Swell conference in New York City.

The newly approved entity, Ripple National Trust Bank (RNTB), is authorized to manage reserves for Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin, serve as a collateral trustee for stablecoin holders, and provide comprehensive digital asset custody services to institutional customers. Garlinghouse emphasized the collaborative potential between crypto and traditional banking, stating, "We've always said crypto and banks work better together," and that "The revolution isn't outside the system. It's from within the system."

This finalized approval follows a conditional approval granted by the OCC approximately 10 months prior, in December 2023. The federal supervision of RNTB significantly bolsters Ripple's regulatory and financial infrastructure. It is crucial to note that RNTB will not function as a traditional commercial bank, meaning it will not accept regular deposits or issue loans. While RLUSD itself continues to be issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, a Ripple subsidiary regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services, the federally supervised RNTB will primarily focus on managing reserves and providing fiduciary custody services.

Since its launch in December 2023, the market capitalization of RLUSD has reportedly grown to approximately $2.5 billion, with increasing utilization in Ripple's institutional payments and trading environments. This institutional focus is a key theme leading into Ripple's Swell conference, scheduled for October 27–29 in New York City, which will convene industry leaders from traditional finance, the crypto sector, and the broader XRP ecosystem.

Despite this impressive regulatory milestone for Ripple, the price of XRP did not record a significant rally following the announcement. As of early October 27 trading, XRP's price remained stable, hovering between $1.30 and $1.31, with minimal movement over the preceding 24 hours. This muted reaction is attributed to the fact that the development primarily concerns Ripple's stablecoin service and institutional custody offerings, rather than directly stimulating new demand for XRP itself.
