During an interview with Citizen Digital on Saturday, May 17, Gachagua urged the opposition leaders to front him as their flagbearer in 2027.
According to Gachagua, he is the best opposition candidate to unseat President William Ruto in the upcoming election.
"We have many candidates. I am of the opinion that I am the best. I should be given the flagbearer of the team," Gachagua declared.
However, the former deputy president stated he was in negotiations with other opposition leaders on who the best candidate was.
While drawing an example from the 2002 elections, Gachagua insisted that the unity of the opposition is non-negotiable.
"The people of Kenya forced the opposition to be united against the Moi project. History is repeating itself. The kind of mismanagement of the country, the levels of corruption, impunity, extrajudicial killings, abductions, state capture, misappropriation – running the country down," Gachagua said.
The former Mathira lawmaker has been holding meetings with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i ahead of them forming a coalition to face Ruto.
The former second in command stated that their unity is because of the common enemy (Ruto), whom he said must be removed from power.
"We have been brought together by circumstances. In my community, there is a saying that buffalos don’t walk together in a herd because they like each other. It is the danger of walking alone. The danger we face in this country makes it mandatory to like each other, to liberate this country, " the former deputy president added.
Meanwhile, the former deputy president issued a strong warning against any attempts to rig the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua cautioned that efforts to undermine the people’s will could throw Kenya into unprecedented chaos.
In an interview on Obinna TV on Friday, May 16, he made a heartfelt appeal to electoral officials, emphasising that the country’s young voters, especially Generation Z, would reject any form of electoral fraud.
Known for his outspoken and fiery style, Gachagua dismissed claims that political forces such as the deep state or powerful insiders could sway the presidential vote.
He noted that recent changes in electoral laws and court rulings have established polling stations as the ultimate locus of democratic authority.
