Union Warns Against Politicizing IEBC Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Kenya Independent Commissions Workers Union (KICOWU) has issued a warning to politicians regarding the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ahead of the 2027 elections. Secretary General Njeru Kanyamba stated on May 17 that some political figures are using social media to make inflammatory statements that could incite unrest before or after the polls. Kanyamba emphasized the irresponsibility of such behavior, noting its potential danger to the democratic process.
Kanyamba highlighted the union's concern for the safety and wellbeing of its members, who work across various independent commissions, including the IEBC. He reminded the public that IEBC staff are responsible only for announcing results, not for electing leaders. Kanyamba urged politicians to refrain from directing their frustrations at the IEBC and its officials if they fail to convince voters.
The union referenced previous election cycles in which IEBC staff faced threats, violence, and exile, cautioning against a return to intimidation and scapegoating. KICOWU vowed to protect its members from being used as scapegoats by politicians who are unprepared to campaign and are instead creating excuses for potential election losses.
KICOWU called on security agencies, including Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, to protect IEBC staff both now and during the 2027 elections. Kanyamba appealed to political actors and their supporters to exercise restraint in their public remarks as the country approaches the election period, emphasizing the shared ownership of the country and the dangers of descending into chaos and anarchy.
