Premier League Steps In: Casemiro Red Card Decision Explained

The Premier League clash between Manchester United and Chelsea on Saturday evening was marked by significant disciplinary action, as both teams were reduced to 10 men. Manchester United entered the game aiming to rebound from a recent defeat to Manchester City, seeking crucial winning ways.
Manchester United midfielder Casemiro was at the center of a controversial dismissal, receiving two yellow cards from referee Peter Bankes. His initial booking occurred for a foul on Enzo Fernandez, shortly after Bruno Fernandes had put the Reds ahead. The decisive second yellow card, leading to his marching orders in first-half added time, was for a challenge on Chelsea substitute Andrey Santos near the halfway line. Sky Sports commentator Alan Smith, a former Arsenal striker, offered his perspective during the broadcast, describing the first yellow as "silly." Regarding the second, Smith noted that while Casemiro did get the ball, the yellow card was issued for "pulling back Santos" and "putting two arms around his man."
The Premier League later clarified the decision through their Match Centre social media account, explaining that Casemiro received the second yellow for a "holding offence that stopped a promising attack." They also confirmed that, as per VAR protocol, there was no VAR involvement in the second yellow card. Due to the sending off being for a second bookable offence, Manchester United has no avenue to appeal the decision. Consequently, Casemiro will face a one-match suspension, ruling him out of the upcoming Premier League fixture away to Brentford. He is expected to return to the squad the following weekend for United's match against Sunderland on October 4.
Earlier in the match, Chelsea also saw one of their players dismissed. Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was shown a straight red card within minutes of kick-off for hacking down Bryan Mbeumo outside the penalty area. This decision was made for the denial of a goal-scoring opportunity. Like Casemiro, Sanchez will also serve a one-match ban, with his suspension taking effect during Chelsea's midweek Carabao Cup trip to Lincoln City.
Despite both sides playing with 10 men for a significant portion of the game, Manchester United went into the half-time break holding a 2-0 lead, courtesy of goals from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro himself before his dismissal.
