Phoenix Suns Deliver Crushing Blow to Warriors, Advance to Face Thunder

The Phoenix Suns claimed the eighth seed in the Western Conference playoffs after a commanding 111-96 victory over the Golden State Warriors in the NBA's play-in tournament on Friday night. This decisive win means the Suns will advance to face the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 on Sunday, while the Warriors' season has come to an end.

Jalen Green was the standout performer for the Suns, delivering an exceptional 36 points on remarkable 14-of-20 shooting from the field, including an impressive 8-of-14 from beyond the arc. He was ably supported by Devin Booker, who added 20 points, and Jordan Goodwin, who contributed 19 points, pulled down nine rebounds, and was a defensive force with six steals. The Suns' collective effort saw them lock down the Warriors' offense, particularly containing superstar Stephen Curry.

Stephen Curry, typically a prolific scorer, struggled to find his rhythm and clean looks throughout the game, finishing with just 17 points on 4-of-16 shooting. Brandin Podziemski led the Warriors in scoring with 23 points, but it was not enough to overcome the Suns' strong performance. Late in the fourth quarter, tensions flared, leading to the ejection of Devin Booker and Golden State's Draymond Green after multiple exchanges of words and two technical fouls each. Additionally, Kristaps Porzingis of the Warriors played through right ankle soreness, sustained in a previous game against the Los Angeles Clippers, managing 11 points in just 15 minutes of play.

The Suns established an early dominance, quickly building a 13-2 lead after capitalizing on four Warriors turnovers. They extended their advantage to 33-15 by the end of the first quarter, as Golden State shot a mere 30% from the field and 1-of-9 from three-point range. The Warriors mounted a recovery in the second quarter, trimming the deficit to 50-45 by halftime. However, Phoenix regained control in the third, expanding their lead to 69-53 with 5:12 remaining after a fast-break layup by Royce O'Neale.

Despite the Suns holding an 85-72 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the game, there was a palpable sense of caution given recent history; Phoenix had blown an 11-point fourth-quarter lead against Portland earlier in the week, while Golden State had famously rallied from a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit against the Clippers. The Warriors indeed showed signs of another comeback when Curry hit a three-pointer to cut the margin to 85-78 with 9:30 on the clock. However, the Suns quickly snuffed out any hopes of a rally by responding with the next seven points, securing their lead and avoiding the undesirable distinction of being the first team to lose both play-in tournament games on their home floor since the current format was established in 2021.
