Peter Obi's Bold Threat: 'We'll Rig Those Who Rig Elections' Ignites Debate
Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has vowed to rigorously combat election rigging in the 2027 general election. He promises to ensure electoral offenders, including INEC officials and those who forge certificates, will face jail terms, alongside implementing significant electoral reforms to strengthen the process.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has issued a stern warning to those who engage in election rigging. Speaking at an NDC town hall meeting in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Obi declared that his administration would ensure electoral offenders face severe jail terms if he is elected.
Addressing party supporters on the critical issue of electoral integrity and the urgent need to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system, Obi emphasized that his party would not tolerate manipulation. He explicitly stated, “this coming election, we will rig those who rig it,” signaling a strong intent to counter any attempts at electoral fraud.
Furthermore, Obi pledged that if elected President, he would implement comprehensive reforms to make election rigging impossible. This would involve strengthening political parties and overhauling the entire electoral process. He assured the audience, “if I’m elected the President of Nigeria, nobody will rig election in this country again because the first thing we need to do is to strengthen our parties, strengthen the process.”
The former Anambra State governor also outlined plans for tougher electoral laws. He advocated for stricter eligibility requirements for candidates, asserting that individuals must demonstrate attendance at both primary and secondary school, with verifiable records. Obi warned that any candidate found to have forged their certificates would face imprisonment, stating, “If you didn’t attend any of them or forge your certificate, you go to jail.”
Obi extended this strict warning beyond candidates to all stakeholders involved in the electoral process, including officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and anyone else participating in election administration. He unequivocally declared that under his leadership, “Any INEC official, anybody who is involved with elections under my watch that rigs elections will go to jail.”
