PDP BoT Declares Convention On Despite Challenges

The national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), scheduled for this Saturday in Oyo State, is set to proceed as planned, according to Senator Adolphus Wabara, the chairman of the party's Board of Trustees (BoT). Wabara affirmed that all organs of the party are aligned with this decision, reiterating that the convention will hold.
Senator Wabara made these remarks while receiving the committee report from a six-man panel investigating the crisis surrounding the convention's conduct. He stressed the practicality of holding the event, stating, "It is absolutely practical, or practicable if you want to use that word for us to go to the convention." He further elaborated that the Governor’s Forum, the National Working Committee (NWC), and the Board of Trustees had all previously agreed on holding the convention, a consensus highlighted in their last meeting's communiqué.
Addressing potential legal challenges, Wabara emphasized the party's reliance on the Supreme Court's judgment, which he believes should guide lower courts. He critically observed the issuance of various court orders on issues already deliberated by the Supreme Court, suggesting such actions could be seen as challenging the apex court. Despite acknowledging the unpredictable nature of legal outcomes in Nigeria, he maintained that the party's internal organs remain committed to the convention.
Wabara concluded by affirming the PDP's stance as a law-abiding party. He stated that while the convention is planned to go ahead, "if we are stopped by the courts, we are a law-abiding party, we have always been there, we will still get there, then we will probably obey the law, or obey the last order, as the case may be." This statement underscores the party's intention to comply with judicial directives should they legally prohibit the convention.
