Nigerian Tech Maverick's Journey: AI Revolutionizes Healthcare from Jos
Goshit Rotkhinen Gideon's journey into artificial intelligence for healthcare began not in a lab, but as a curious child exploring his family's desktop computer in Jos, Plateau State. His early fascination with games and software like Microsoft Word, Paint, and Excel quickly evolved into a deeper inquiry into the mechanics of computing. This innate curiosity propelled him to pursue computer science at the University of Jos, setting the stage for his future endeavors in AI-driven healthcare solutions.
Goshit's initial interaction with technology occurred around the age of five or six when his family acquired a desktop computer. Beyond the entertainment of games, he meticulously explored various applications, self-teaching fundamental computer skills that later proved invaluable. His secondary school introduction to Visual Basic offered his first glimpse into programming. However, the true catalyst for his career path emerged from rewatching 'Iron Man 3' in 2014. Tony Stark's intelligent AI assistant, Jarvis, deeply captivated Goshit, inspiring him to dream of building similar intelligent machines to assist humans, initially conceptualizing this through the lens of robotics.
Facing the absence of a robotics engineering program in Nigeria, Goshit chose computer science for his university studies. His early programming efforts were unconventional; with a defunct home computer, he learned Java by meticulously writing code examples on paper, absorbing the logic and structure before ever executing a line. At university, he gravitated towards Python, embarking on a self-guided learning path through free online courses on platforms like Coursera, edX, and YouTube, focusing on data analysis and machine learning.
His undergraduate project reflected this interest, involving sequence prediction models to generate sheet music by predicting musical notes. This project laid the groundwork for his transition into healthcare AI. His supervisor recognized his aptitude and invited him to collaborate on research projects applying AI to medical challenges, including predicting Lassa fever outbreaks, analyzing malaria data, and optimizing blood supply management in hospitals. This exposure immersed him deeply in the domain of medical AI.
After completing his National Youth Service, Goshit secured a role at an IT company. Although he initially applied as a data analyst, his background in AI and healthcare applications perfectly aligned with the company's objectives, leading him to join their team. Today, his work centers on developing AI systems that empower healthcare providers to manage patient care more effectively, automating tasks such as post-clinic visit follow-ups, health monitoring, and patient communication, thereby alleviating manual burdens on caregivers.
