Nigerian Oil Powerhouse Roars: Dangote Refinery Makes Historic First Petrol Export to US

The highly anticipated first petrol shipment exported from the Dangote refinery in Nigeria has successfully reached the United States. This marks a significant milestone for the refinery, as sources within the facility confirmed that the vessel departed approximately two weeks prior to its arrival in the US.
According to data from MyShipTracking, a widely recognized vessel tracking website, the shipment, carried aboard the vessel named Gemini Pearls, arrived in New York on Monday. This information was corroborated by the vessel's automatic identification system (AIS). Further reports, initially from Reuters on Tuesday, confirmed that Vitol, a prominent international oil trader, and Sunoco, a key North American fuel distributor, took delivery of this inaugural US import of petrol from the Dangote refinery.
The tanker Gemini Pearl discharged its cargo on Monday at Sunoco’s Linden terminal, situated within the bustling New York Harbor. Details emerging from the Reuters report indicate that Vitol acquired Gemini Pearl’s consignment, estimated at approximately 320,000 barrels of petrol, from Mocoh Oil, a Switzerland-based company. A substantial portion of this cargo was subsequently sold by Vitol to Sunoco, although the precise volume transferred between these two entities remains undisclosed at present.
Looking ahead, the movement of petrol from the Dangote refinery to the US is set to continue. Reuters has reported that a second shipment, facilitated by Glencore and destined for Shell, is currently en route aboard the vessel ‘MH Daisen’. This particular cargo is projected to arrive in the New York Harbor area around September 19. Furthermore, a third significant cargo, also purchased by Vitol from Mocoh, is being transported by the vessel ‘Seaexplorer’, with an anticipated arrival in the New York Harbor vicinity around September 22. These subsequent shipments underscore a growing supply chain for refined petroleum products from the Dangote refinery to the American market.
