Nigerian Government Declares Public Holidays for Eid-el-Kabir Amid Heightened Insecurity Concerns

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to commemorate this year’s Eid-el-Adha, also widely known as Eid-el-Kabir. This significant announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. The declaration underscores the government's profound respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of millions of Nigerian Muslims who partake in this sacred occasion globally.
In extending its warm felicitations to Muslim faithful both at home and in the diaspora, the Federal Government urged all Nigerians to utilize this period for profound prayer and sober reflection. Citizens are encouraged to seek divine guidance for the nation's ongoing pursuit of peace, security, and prosperity for every citizen. The government emphasized the spiritual significance of Eid-el-Adha, highlighting its roots in faith, sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion for humanity, and stressed the importance of embracing tolerance and national cohesion, especially in light of prevailing economic and security challenges.
Ahead of the two-day holiday, increased movement of travelers is anticipated across the country as families gather for the festivities. Transport hubs, markets, and livestock centers are already experiencing heightened activities, particularly in northern Nigeria, where preparations for the annual religious event have intensified. Despite concerns over rising prices and economic pressures, traders have reported increased demand for rams and food items.
However, the celebrations are set to unfold under strict security arrangements, especially in parts of Northern Nigeria. The military, specifically the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, has issued warnings regarding the possibility of isolated attempts by remnants of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) elements to carry out attacks. Intelligence suggests these groups might exploit the festive period to target crowded public places using suicide bombers and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
In response to these threats, security agencies are poised to heighten surveillance and deploy personnel to major prayer grounds, highways, and public centers nationwide. Troops have been strategically deployed to vulnerable areas across the theatre of operation to preempt any security breaches. Intensified surveillance operations are underway, with security agencies collaborating closely with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and local vigilance groups. Residents are strongly advised to remain vigilant and cautious in crowded environments such as markets, motor parks, prayer grounds, and banking halls. They are also urged to report any suspicious movements or abandoned objects to the authorities and to refrain from spreading unverified information that could incite panic.
Eid-el-Adha, observed by Muslims globally, commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's profound act of obedience and willingness to sacrifice his son, which was ultimately superseded by divine intervention providing a ram as a substitute. The festival traditionally features congregational prayers, animal sacrifice, charitable giving, and visits among families and communities. The Federal Government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence and national unity, extending wishes for a peaceful, blessed, and spiritually fulfilling Eid celebration to all Muslims across the country.
