Nigeria recently honored its fallen heroes, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, Captain Ismail, and other soldiers, who were laid to rest with full military honours following their deaths in active service. The solemn burial ceremony took place at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri, Borno State, drawing a gathering of dignitaries, military personnel, and grieving family members.

Among those in attendance to pay their final respects were Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum; Senator Ali Ndume; the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.); the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu; senior military officers; and the bereaved families of the deceased. The officers and soldiers were accorded full military rites, a symbolic recognition of their immense courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria's peace and territorial integrity.

During the ceremony, heartfelt prayers were offered for the repose of the fallen soldiers, and citations detailing their distinguished service records were read aloud to their families. Leaders present delivered poignant tributes, describing the deceased as brave patriots who stood resolute in the face of danger and paid the ultimate price for their nation. Governor Zulum emphasized that the soldiers died while carrying out their duties in defence of the country, assuring that their sacrifice would be remembered. Minister Musa reiterated that the officers and soldiers gave their lives in service to the nation, affirming that their sacrifice was not in vain. The Chief of Defence Staff underscored the armed forces' continued commitment to ongoing operations against insecurity and pledged support for the families of fallen personnel. Similarly, the Chief of Army Staff stated that the soldiers' names and dedicated service would forever be etched into the army's history.

The Nigerian Army noted that the burial served as a stark reminder of the profound human cost of military operations and the inherent risks faced by its personnel. Brigadier General Braimah, Captain Ismail, and their compatriots were tragically killed during an attack by Boko Haram on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, as part of Operation HADIN KAI. This incident highlights the intensity of Nigeria’s prolonged battle against insurgency in the North-East, where troops have for over a decade confronted extremist groups like Boko Haram and its offshoots.

The conflict, which has ravaged communities across several geopolitical zones, has claimed thousands of civilian and military lives and displaced millions. Over the years, numerous officers and soldiers have fallen in combat, ambushes, and counter-insurgency operations. Wednesday's ceremony, marked by the visible anguish of the bereaved, served as a powerful reminder that Nigeria's fragile peace is sustained by the profound sacrifice of men and women who, like Brigadier General Braimah and his comrades, prioritize duty above self and ultimately give everything.
