Kurt Cobain's Iconic 'Foxes' T-Shirt Hits Auction Block, Presented by Hole's Patty Schemel

A highly significant piece of music history, Kurt Cobain's iconic 'Foxes' T-shirt, is currently up for auction, drawing considerable attention from collectors and fans alike. This light blue, short-sleeve shirt, emblazoned with the logo for the 1980 coming-of-age drama 'Foxes' starring Jodie Foster on the front and the slogan 'Daring To Do It' across the back, was famously worn by the late Nirvana frontman during a pivotal 1993 band photo shoot with acclaimed photographer and director Anton Corbijn. The resulting black-and-white image, featuring Cobain alongside bandmates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, is now recognized as an iconic representation of the band and is currently used as Spotify's banner photo for Nirvana’s page.
The rare item is being offered through Julien’s Auctions, with initial estimates placing its value between $4,000 and $6,000. However, bidding has already surpassed these expectations, reaching $8,000 at press time, indicating strong demand for the unique memorabilia. The auction is set to conclude on Friday, May 29.
Adding to its unique provenance, the T-shirt is being sold by Patty Schemel, the longtime drummer for the band Hole, in which Cobain's wife Courtney Love also played. Cobain gifted the shirt to Schemel in the early 1990s, highlighting a close friendship built on shared interests. According to Julien's website, Cobain and Schemel were not only close friends but also bonded over their mutual love for films, with Schemel often encouraging Cobain to watch movies like 'Foxes.' They also shared a passion for discovering fun and obscure thrifted T-shirts, frequently shopping together away from the city and exchanging their finds.
The story behind Cobain wearing the shirt for the 1993 photoshoot is particularly charming. A stylist had brought several shirts to the shoot, and Cobain specifically chose the 'Foxes' tee because of his and Schemel's shared enjoyment of the film. After the session, Cobain expressed a desire to keep the shirt before eventually passing it on to Schemel.
The auction includes a signed letter of authenticity from Schemel herself, providing a personal and detailed account of how she came to possess the T-shirt. Her letter begins with a vivid recollection from
