Nigeria's Ebola Scare: Index Patient Evacuated, Nation Nears All-Clear

Nigeria's federal government has expressed optimism regarding the potential end of its current Ebola outbreak by December 7, 2026, provided no further confirmed or probable cases are detected. This provisional date is subject to validation by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), requiring a continuous 42-day countdown without new infections. The declaration of optimism followed the successful medical evacuation of the country's index patient to Switzerland.

The index patient, identified as a 42-year-old Ugandan-born wife of a Swiss diplomat, was evacuated from Abuja on October 26 aboard an air ambulance. Her husband, also a Swiss citizen, accompanied her. The evacuation took place through the private jet wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, where heightened security measures were implemented. WHO has since congratulated Nigeria for its efficient handling of the index case, noting that the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian health workers managed the acute phase of her illness.

Despite the evacuation, Nigeria's immediate priorities remain active monitoring of all identified contacts, prompt investigation of alerts, and strengthening preparedness across health facilities. The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, emphasized that any additional case would necessitate a fresh countdown in line with WHO criteria. Nigeria continues to closely follow 52 contacts, while Switzerland has assumed responsibility for the patient's ongoing medical care and the monitoring of her husband, identified as contact number 53.

President Bola Tinubu, speaking at the 50th anniversary celebration and Annual General and Scientific Meeting of the West African College of Physicians (WACP) in Abuja, declared that Africa possesses the capacity to eradicate Ebola and other infectious diseases. This ambitious goal, he stated, could be achieved through sustained political commitment, adequate investment in public health, stronger institutions, and robust regional collaboration. Nigeria, he reaffirmed, is committed to strengthening disease surveillance, laboratory networks, emergency preparedness, and cross-border cooperation as key pillars of his administration's Renewed Hope Agenda, ensuring quality healthcare is a fundamental right, not a privilege.

In a related development, the NCDC's decision to offer a weekly stipend of N100,000 to eligible contacts placed under isolation or quarantine drew criticism. Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, warned that this financial incentive could inadvertently encourage individuals to falsely claim exposure to Ebola to benefit from the payment. He urged the NCDC to ensure proper verification of beneficiaries to prevent abuse of this emergency support measure.

During his address at the WACP anniversary, President Tinubu, represented by Prof. Pate, highlighted the administration's investments in healthcare infrastructure, including the construction, rehabilitation, and equipping of health facilities, expansion of specialist institutions, and revitalization of primary healthcare centers. He noted the recruitment of over 30,000 health professionals and increased medical education quotas, alongside the deployment of digital technology for improved disease surveillance. The president challenged the WACP to provide evidence-based recommendations to address the
